Fire Extinguishers ?????

Big fan of Halon... have a couple from 1995 that I keep in the surgical wards.

Kind of ironic at how many excellent things are regulated out of existence.

Mate, firstly I will state that I am a "Global Warming" sceptic. That being said, a sceptic does not immediately dismiss what data/statement is being proposed but analyses the data and the source of that data/statement.

As to the aerosols/chemicals that were depleting the ozone resulting in an atmospheric hole over the antarctic, I'm am glad that their use was stopped and that the hole continues to repair itself... because that hole directly effected me and all of the very southern hemispheric landmasses. The UV rays were, and still are for the most part, brutal down here. Even in the dead of Summer I will only wear long sleeve shirts and trousers + Acubra whilst outside... even when overcast.

Halon as a fire retardant has its place in mankind's arsenal when used in specific situations. During my Navy days it was the last resort Engine Room 'dump' for an out of control fire in that space. Anyone who was still in the ER was 'lost'.

AFFF is a great blanketing agent. But you do have to know how much to use in any given situation... and that takes training. I believe that the Tassie Rural Fire Brigade is, for the second season, using a fire retardant foam to prevent flair-ups of bush fires. (we'll see what the Greenies have to grumble about later )

Right now, for the domestic consumer, Dry Powder is the cheapest and most readily available portable extinguisher. Most automotive/hardware stores have them (even some supermarkets) and they are better than having nothing at all. Other types can be purchased from more specialised stores if you know what you're after.

Science marches on!

....reminds me I need to get a pressurized water fire extinguisher for my wood shop.

Yup, a pressurized water extinguisher is just the ticket in many situations, plus, a thumb over the nozzle will give you a pretty good semblance of a fog nozzle, extending it's usefulness into B & C fires. It's also great to have around when the kids get rowdy with their big squirt guns, you can demonstrate what a REAL Super-Soaker is.

The science regarding ozone depletion by compounds such as freon is very well understood.

I am impressed by what I have read about Cold Fire and recently bought some for adding to some water fire extinguishers. It allows a water extinguisher to be used for fires other than A fires.

That stuff reminds me of something they used in the 70s . The army called it Light Water. I used it when I got fire boss certified to monitor aircraft loading nukes. It worked very well on liquid fuel fires. You just sprayed it across the flame base and it smothered the fire fast. All it was was an additive to the regular water in a standard extinguisher and looked like urine. I don't recall it being all that toxic either. Just flush it away when you are done.

Cold Fire is non-toxic, biodegradable, easy clean up, and sounds like it works well - pretty impressive.

I've never owned a pressurized water extinguisher. I appears you charge through a shrader valve like a tire. How often do you need to recharge?

After you discharge it.
