Broken drawbar... chances a 'pro' welder can fix it

The hole may have been put there in case a huge down force is put on the drawbar like happened here. Better for the drawbar to break than to rip the bottom out of the tractor.

When something hard like this is over stressed it's likely there are other cracks near the break, especially at the other hole near the broken one.

Bigdeano, DE, I'm starting to agree it does look hardened, there's no stretching (plastic). That curved part of the break was because the bar was bending as it broke. Just strange there's no visible progression of the crack, that it could crack all on one shot. I think the front hole is oval'd simply by wear/dirt.

We're on the 11th page, need somebody (OP) to centerpunch it, then centerpunch mild steel. Touch a file to it, then to mild steel, or a drill, a hacksaw, a grinder? Kinda hard to see the difference between sparking 1018 and 1040, but 1040 is a lot stronger, and it's heat-treatable. Its been 6 days in the dead of winter, everyone wants-ta-know, is it hardened or mild steel? If mild then just weld the dang thing, easy repair, just takes awhile (grinding then) feeding rods (or wire) into it.

Come to think of it, if it's hardened, then just weld the dang thing too. Difference being, if it's mild, then can be as strong as it ever was. If it's 1040 or some higher grade, then the weld is weaker than the rest. But so what? Just weld up the hole too.

Looking at the break, grain size, direction of break, etc. ... I would have to say it not only has had some heat treatment but is also made of a oil quenched "tuff" grade of steel. At the shop, we had access to old fork stock (fork truck) that we would use to machine parts out of. Our heat treat oven was only about 2 ft long so we had to improvise on "hot" jobs.

Dadnatron (OP) hasn't posted anything in 5 days. I assume that means he went on a cross country trip over the long weekend, headed to a "non-pro" welder's shop to get this draw bar fixed. He might be rolling up the Shield Arc's place as we speak.

My guess is his original question got bombarded by 11 pages of who needs what welder, myself included and he's already fixed it and moved onto the next task, lol.

Everything I am familiar with has a "deform" rate, including glass. Just might be hard to visibly detect, as in shattered glass. :)
