Like to eat? Thank a farmer.

Yep. In the 2 miles surrounding my home property there are 7 farm houses. All 7 are young families in their 30s and 40s. I am the old one (65). All 7 make a portion of their living farming. 2 make their entire living farming. I thank them every time I see them. I'd do anything for them. One young man that makes his entire living farming cuts my 15 acres of hay on shares. He buys my half to feed his cattle. I sell to him at 50% of going price. He always argues and wants to pay more. I always tell him how much I need him in the community. :)

Thank you for the food you provide so we can eat! That reminded me of this thing in the paper, has nothing to do with farming but it made me laugh.

That's pretty funny. I'm a hunter and a farmer - that must be why I'm so imbalanced

Comments in there are exactly what I was referring to....farmers are the bad guys treating their animals badly.
Those animals are our way of life...we treat them well, they provide us with '''meat, milk, eggs etc... why would we voluntarily hurt our bottom by mistreating them ??...Just does not make any sense !
Think about it for a minute :duh:

Nicely done Richard! Good neighbors and a compassionate community is what makes us great.

I'm retired in northern rural Minnesota. One of my neighbors is a young guy who runs a small herd of cattle and is a full time school teacher. Several years ago, we agreed on his running his cattle on my pasture if he would be kind enough to fix the barb wire fence should a tree limb land on it. So far, no broken fence. I have two hay fields which he bales. I charge him nothing. Several years ago, I leased them but I changed my mind and would rather see this young guy use the hay....teachers aren't rich either. Last summer, I even used my tractor to help him take the hay to his farm. My wife really enjoys the cattle when they come to visit us. Our back yard butts up to our pasture and they tend to congregrate on the other side of the fence. It might have something to do with her hand feeding some of the cows and his bull....and then again, maybe it doesn't. :)

My very good friend is a huge farmer, row crops over 25K acres a year. His "compact" tractor is a 7*** JD with cab and FEL. He doesn't own a tractor without a cab. Him and I never have discussions comparable to those here. His World is just not comparable.

He was telling me this morning that they traded one of their three 24 row JD planters, which are 4 years old, for a new "High Speed" 24 row planter. Cost $200K difference to trade. Hoping the new High Speed concept works. If so in the future they might be able to cut back to just two large planters.

Now what would any of us posters in this thread have to offer him of value for discussion??? :confused3: :D

The off topic discussion could be interesting.

I'm acquainted with a couple of farmers, one owns a company with a global presence and runs a small 8K spread as a hobby farm with Buffalo and Elk,

Rob the other with his son and brothers runs a mixed grain operation from a wheelchair.

Last summer Rob had four new grain bins installed each having a capacity of 48,000 bushels, which equates into 200 semi truck loads per bin. The new bins allow him to hold onto his grain and oil producing seeds like canola, sunflower and hemp while other farmers cash strapped sell early to pay down bank loans. he has the luxury of holding until the market improves.

Rob's biggest concern is not that of money but in keeping the farm in the family after he passes on, I suggested to him since he had enough land he could put in a family cemetery that way the farm would become more personalized to his heirs.
