I think for the purchase price of $1,100,, I would rather risk buying a used Woods RFM,,
rather than buying knives for the flail,, and all the work to change them..

Since the JD dealer is on the way to where the RFM is,, I may stop, and ask the price of the flail replacements,,
That looks pretty much identical to the bottom of my old Ford 917, except for the green paint. Similar wear on the knives. They cut fine so I've never sharpened them.

The blades in the pic have never been sharpened, or rotated, and are ten years old,,
I only mow about 8-10 acres about a half dozen times a year.

Hmmm,, that is about 500 acres,,
I can only imagine what a finish mower blade would look like after 500 acres.

Those are Flails!

There are no "knives" or "cutters" on a flail .

I priced a new LandPride 90" with 6 blades and an 84" with 3 blades and the price difference was huge. For 8 acres that I cut I went with the 84" RFM on my JD 3720. I don't wait until the grass is out of control before I cut but it works great.

I can understand that. Twice as many bearings, pulleys, spindles, idlers, blades, etc. Basically twice as many of working components on a slightly larger deck.

The whole cutting & mounting mechanism is the flail. You can get a flail mower with side slicers knives like pictured above or hammers, usually "duck foot" style, but there are other types, especially on crop shredder & forestry flails. There is a nomenclature for the different cutting element types.
