Use a clamp on hinge pin.

I've seen these but don't have a source for different sizes, round vs square, etc. Do you?

Referring to the catalogue link below, post hinge (part no. MH3) might be the ticket if you want to avoid drilling holes. Use it in conjunction with one of the gate frame hinges as listed. Or you could use the round post self closing hinge (bottom of cat) - although they do require tek type screws for installation.

I know what you mean. That 5/8 drill was so geared down it probably didn't turn more than about 180 RPM, and had "ship" loads of torque, which was good and bad.. That thing could twist you off of a ladder in a heartbeat.

I have a Dewalt DWD460. Tons of torque but it has bind-up control where if the drill starts to spin, it cuts out immediately. Don't have to worry about breaking your wrist :)

That sounds nice! I have had the heck beaten out of my wrists more than once by powerful drills.

I try to stop as it starts breaking through, reversing the bit direction and knock the chips off then lightly going forward again.
But it's a crap shoot. One of my dewalts is **** bent and determined to break my wrist at least once!

I used cobalt bits for mine. It isn't super fast, but works. My drill has a level indicator on it to help get a level hole. I used the same bits do put holes in a trailer tongue made of hardened galvenized steel, worked well there as well.

One tip - when you drill the holes make sure to paint the cut sections on the hole edge so you don't get rust!

Best part... I got a few of them at Lowes on clearance for $35 a piece. :) Similar to the Milwaukee Super Hawg I believe.

First big use was drilling a 2-9/16" hole in a 14" thick oak beam. No way I could have done it without a drill that big.

Ahh, but I'm sure the number of responses would have been fewer if the OP had asked how to build a nuclear power generator.
