Anyone have a LED dusk to dawn pole light?

That is what I had until the unit burned out. didn't replace it but should have. IMO a yard light that is on all night is about useless and does help hout the dirt bags - gives them light to see by. I have two neigbors who run them, one of them had a new truck stolen right out fromunder the yard light. They are far enough off the highway that the kids, whose prior ride ran out of gas almost at their entry road, would not even had known the house was there had it not been for that stupid light. Glad they did though as my house was only a 100 yeards down the highway.
It can be argued both ways. Just because your neighbor's truck was stolen doesn't mean anything.

Yes it gives thieves light to see. But thieves also like darkness. Motion sensors will tell you something is out there, if the reach far enough, and if they are not going off all the time.

I have to places, both without any street lights. My camp I use motion sensitive, but those can be annoying in large areas when trying to get stuff down. My house has dusk till dawn, and it is failing, and I really miss it

I think I like a combination of lights with switches you can control, and motion lights. But if I was worried about crime I would lean to dusk to dawn I think. Criminals like it dark.

Again just cause your neighbor got his truck stolen only proves they wanted his more then yours.

Before anyone poo poos the life span of traditional lights, my dusk to dawn bulb was replaced 2008 or 2009. On and off will shorten the life.

Poo poo. :D I am done with incandescent, I like the energy savings of LEDs and the lifespan.

I intended to buy the SAMS light for my mother and father-in-laws places but was told by someone that although bright they only lit up a small area directly underneath them. Went to Lowes instead and got a more expensive LED light that was supposed to light an entire back yard. It does that and more. My mother especially is very happy with her light. It is located on a slight rise between her house and the stables and it lights up the entire back yard.

Anyway check the reviews and see what people are saying about the lights before you buy.

Any more details on that Lowe's light? It would be worth a try on my barn. The light is about 18 feet up over the big doors and is on all night. I would imagine a savings from LED but I would need to get one bright enough.

EDIT--Wife just looked at the old 175W mercury vapor bulb box we have and it's 7900 lumens. It doesn't seem an LED would be much more than 3500 lumens but I have no idea how to compare. If I can save money, yes but out in the middle of nowhere we need the light at night.

That was two or three years ago and I do not remember any details except they were bought at Lowes. Part of what they like about the lights is that it is a bright white light coming from them. Just read the reviews online before buying.

We have a power pole midway between the house and the barn, and it has a dusk-to-dawn sodium lamp that's been out for years. We've been debating the merits of running the power to the barn underground, or just keeping the pole and changing the light to LED. We've been changing over all of the lights inside the house to LEDs as we are remodeling, so we'll likely change that one as well.

Of course you are ignoring the fact that they wouldn't have known the place was ever there. They were a couple juveniles driving a stolen PU when it ran out of gas. Jad they not gotten that one, mine wouild probably have disappeared as my place is right on the highway.

Motion sensors are the answer and yes they have to 'on too often' problem. But they will scare theives away, Not so a constant on one.

Not having a light on, does place blanket over your property, so no one knows it is there. Sure it helps. But the mailbox, headlights, moon, ect also give you away. Maybe in some case it does draw attention.

Problem with motion sensors is they don't reach far enough for big yards. Which I why you need a pole light. Plus they will cause the bulb to burn out.

There are pros and cons. I am not sure what the best way is. I think theives can figure out that light is on a sensor and no one is paying attention. Hopefully someone going by sees them, same as if dusk to dawn.

My house has dusk to dawn, and I really miss it when it is not working. My other place does not. I do think you need both motion sensors and lights you can turn on. Does no good when dog is barking if you can't turn on the light. Plus it is just annoying when you have to work outside, and it keeps shutting off.

Does a long drive way help or hurt? With your arguement a long driveway, and they would not know you are there. Also no one to see them, or here. I live out in the country. I worry no one would know.

Either way thieves suck, and hard saying how to stop the buggers.

Energy savings, but is it cost savings, and how long until you break even? Replacing failed light, or replacing a functioning light? I need a new bulb, $10. I am not sure LED has matured enough. Especially for a yard light on a pole.

CFLs were the next best thing. Now they got high tech incandescents. Also lets not forget sometimes to lower cost, other people are paying your way.

There is alot of factor in. I am not saying they are bad, but I am not 100% convinced either. I put in LED vanity. It was $$$. I liked the look of it, and wanted to give it a try
