I have a grapple with 2 upper tines, each with it's own cylinder. I find this very helpful. When pushing brush it does not matter. But I run a little sawmill occasionally and odd shaped logs are clamped nicely by having 2 clamping positions. Same goes for chunks of broken concrete or other debris. Mine is a Bradco by Pallidin.

Good for you building your own.

Thanks to all of the suggestions, i am currently working on making some more changes but work is a bear right now. It's great that I can get the material for free but when there's work to do it must come first. not sure when I'll have the energy to get this going but If I can take a break and order the material this week or next it won't take but a few minutes to cut it out.

I just need to make some of the changes suggested by my fine friends on here, I think I have the right cylinder for my lid.
Here is a link to it. http://www.surpluscenter.com/Hydrau...YD-CYL-LION-20LH06-112-3000-PSI-9-8260-06.axd

Still haven't ironed out all I need for the third function system, but I think it goes like this:
DO3 subplate
dual solenoid valve
handle with switch.

I'm having a hard time finding a handle with switch that I like and doesn't break the bank so any help there would be appreciated.

Try this handle, looks good and they have many styles!!!!

Good Luck

How are you going to run your hoses? I just had one fail on my grapple because it rubbed on the edge of the metal tubing that it ran through. I need to find a better way to protect it because it only lasted a couple of years since the last time it failed for the same reason.

OK so the Scorpion handle is all that's out there?
Still looking at the hose locations, but I am thinking I will run them along side the loader arm and stick them in a protective sleeve.
Now I am trying to figure out which valve and sub-plate and how to connect it correctly.
Anyone have any ideas or information there?

Does anyone know the flow rate on my tractor?
Mahindra 2538HST?
Also does it matter what Cylinder I use for the grapple as long as I have the stoke close to a match - I need 5" and my chosen cylinder is 6".
my cylinder is rated at 3000psi.

Also concerning 3rd function, i am trying to decide between building myself or buying the Construction Attachments 3rd function kit - do I need the DO3 or DO5 for the correct flow rate?

Also, I am trying to understand the differences between diverter and true 3rd function - which one is the CA Kit?

I know (i think) that true 3rd function allows curl and grapple open at the same time instead of one or the other, but I think I also read that with diverter I can adjust the position of the grapple lid ( and possibly the force?) but with the true 3 rd function the lid is open or closed - is this correct?

And how does this effect my hydraulics with 3rd function? is all of the force continually holding down the lid a constant strain on the system or the grapple?

I am new to hydraulics and don't want to screw this part of the build up.

Oh and one more thing - if I use AR steel, is there any special requirements for welding? specific rods...preheating...ect?

Thanks again and keep the comments coming.

Get a diverter that dont use a sub plate. Adding a sub plate is just one additional thing to buy, and one additional place for a leak to occur.

As far as third function vs diverter....you dont have to have continuous force applied if you dont want to with a 3rd function. Basically think of a 3 position switch. Options are open, close, or off. Once closed and ahold of whatever you are grappling, it turns off if you use a 3-pos rocker with spring to center. Kinda like the old toggle switches for angle on a plow.

Some people say they are pretty good by bumping the switch closed or open to control the speed and force. But realize when you hit that button, its full go until you let off. With a diverter, it uses the say stick as what you are already familiar with. If you want to raise/lower or dump/curl slowly and controled, its the same thing with the grapple. Where as the 3rd function would be like full speed with the joystick (pushing all the way to the stops) every time.

Did you read through my diverter install thread? Its linked in my signature
