what on earth does electricity cost near you?

I was actually researching a telecomm company this am, when I stumbled across this gem:

About us | Hydro One Telecom

It was probably buried somewhere in an Auditor General's Report back when.

Somehow I've missed this one, and I can't imagine why our provincial "leaders" are shy about advertising that they have done a great job of extorting money from the customers of a provincial electrical monopoly, thus enabling the same train-wreck of a business to set up and expand into a totally different market.

Why only have one expensive boon-doogle, when you can have many ?

On the upside, the personal burn I'm feeling about funding this corporate welfare enables me to turn down the heat that I can't afford

(Edit - Canuck dictionary: Hydro-electric is a common resource here, so when Canucks say "Hydro", translate as "electric utility".)

I heard on the radio yesterday that the price reduction will be greater for more remote areas, so I am hoping that I can get more than a 25% reduction on my two properties up in cottage country. We'll see.

An example of demographic variance.

For some, these rate increases have been a minor irritation to their Net Worth. For others, their grocery budgets have been eroded.

IF it actually happens AND the electorate actually falls for this heifer dust of "Oh, we accidentally yanked up rates by 80%, so we expect you peasants to fall all over yourself being grateful we drop it 25%" routine, THEN this province is well and truly done for. Fool Us Once........ Fool Us Countless times.....

Any hypothetical elec rate reduction would be offset by some other general tax, and obviously there would be nothing to stop another majority govt from going back to yanking the rates up 3 months after they are back in.

I live on 5 acres in the bush. I am hoping for a better reduction than the 17%, but I am not holding my breath.

At one time Ontario's power was almost 100% hydraulic generated electricty . Shortened to hydro electric and finally just "Hydro" when referring to electrical power. For several Decades the Electric Utility's official name was "Ontario Hydro" which also reinforced the "hydro" term .

With all the lakes and water we have and the varying elevations I would think that the very cheapest electric power would come from hydro-electric dams.
There was one in South River, ON. Ontario Hydro bought it out and promptly decommissioned it. Said it would cost too much to get it back up to standards. I bet it would be a lot less than the nuke plants they build and no heavy water waste, either.
Speaking of waste, the CEO of hydro gets almost 1 million dollars wages every year and a $150,000.oo car allowance + $150,000.oo gas allowance on top of that. Those figures were from a few years ago.

People get the Government they deserve! Not really much to say beyond that.

I just may have taken Wynn off my very short list of hated people. I heat electrically, so it's a win for me. Let someone else pay for it decades down the road, I will be long gone!

It's like Ontario keeps going to one of those "Pay Day Loan" places or putting it on their maxed out credit card, and everything is just peachy! How Pathetic!

I look at The Game as Total Control+Zero Accountablity.

Hydro (-electric generation) is low cost.... but that is the exact opposite of The Plan - either this is intentional, it's being run by clinically insane people, or they failed public-school arithmetic.

These messes, scandals, and waste just keep getting worse. You don't want to know what Hydro execs (not even C level) blow on air travel.

When I retire, locales that do not require grid-connections will be at the top of my list.

On old friend got his degree while working at Ontario Hydro. He rarely saw his Boss, and his Boss had absolutely no idea what he was doing. That could have been back in the 70s. Things have been rotten there a long time.

Any fairy-tale fees on top of that, or is that Total Bill / kwh ?

Rgds, D.

That's the rate. Fees, license, taxes a title at time of purchase may apply.... oh, wait, that's cars.

I suspect that your experience in the power generation industry is limited.
Power has to be available 24/7/365, a dammed up river is subject to drought, summer limited rain and winter freeze up. The Greenies now throw a fit at everything now incluiding hydro electric and stop or slow down projects.
Try getting approval of the local band of natives for hydro electric. There is suddenly a religious burial site "discovered" within hours of public release of the information of where the dam will flood. However offer the band a significant portion of generating revenue and the protest disapears.
The low wholesale price of power which has been caused by subsidizing wind, solar and gas doesn't make new large scale hydraulic economical. The ever increasing retail price keeps driving industry out and electrical demand down.
Some old dams were decomissioned because it was cheaper to refurbish another station up or downstream and make as much or more power. Sometimes fish habitate or a new modern geological survey indicates an old dam must go.
Waste heavy water ......??? What pray tell are you talking about ?
