What did you do at work today?

Interesting project! Share more and/or start a thread on this if you can!

I'm actually not sure how it will turn out. I don't know how much it might warp if I get it too hot. The plates are 1/8" thick pure grade 2 Ti. It welds like butter. I just wanted to try it and be different.

I looked for titanium fire pits prior to making this. The main thing that comes up is a lightweight, small folding device, designed for a backpack hiker.

I know they use titanium for the SR 71 skin, to take the heat, but probably the Ti6Al4v alloy.

I designed it up in Cad, from something I saw and now I can't seem to find it. Original design I had incorporated a slit at the bottom of the V for drainage and breathing (hotter fire), but I decided that since it is so light, I can just tump it over to drain and clean it. I will add some holes to the legs, that will be rather simple, to mount a bushing and a pole for a grate.

By the time I finish it, our cool weather will be gone.

One thing I learned about titanium grade 2, you need either carbide tipped sawblade, or a crate of replacements. I ended up cutting the end triangles on the mill with coolant and a 1/8" endmill. Light depth of cuts, no big hurry.

What are you welding with?

Miller Synchrowave 250 with the water cooled torch and foot control. It was the first time in 9 years that I actually ran it hard enough for it's cooling temp fan to kick into high.

I ran the Argon a bit on high side. I did not purge the backside. I actually wanted the purple lines from welding as a decorative thing.

I didn't think titanium will withstand much heat before melting, thought maybe little more than aluminum.

The specs say it liquefies at 3030F. I don't actually know how it will hold up to fire pit usage.

Nope... service temperature of Titanium is about 3 times higher than Aluminum!

I am still doing my work thing. We, the whole refinery are getting ready to start back up. Had some crude issues beyond our control. This picture is my control board. The PC is currently on the TBN site doing this posting.:laughing:View attachment 499074

Man, when does the rocket take off?
