I have been running Michelin highway tires on my 2003 Ram 2500 quad-cab, long-bed Cummins-powered truck - currently over 45,000 miles on this set. Wear has been awesome - traction, not so much.

Just purchased 10 acres out in the country with a 1/4 mile grass/dirt driveway. Also looking to purchase a tractor in the near future.

Traction is a concern.

I'm already looking to replace my tires and am looking for recommendations on some high-mileage, mildly aggressive tires.

My current top choice is Nitto terra Grappler G2s. I wore out a set of these on my Jeep Wrangler (70k miles) and they handled and wore great until close to the end. Should have changed them at 65k - that's the tread wear warranty for metric sized tires.

Nitto offers this tire in a 10-ply load range E with a 50k mile tread wear warranty.

Unfortunately, a new to me 4x4 is not in the near future.

I have the Terra Grappler (not the g2) on a '07 4wd 2500, I like them a lot, good traction, wear seems good so far but don't out a lot of miles on the truck. It had worn out terra grapplers on it when I bought the truck used, I kept driving on them and they didn't seem to wear either so I'm guessing they hold up well.
No e load range tire last great, especially towing but I'm happy with them.
Stability is balso good when towing.

The G2 is supposed to have a better/quieter ride over the earlier ones and more sipping I believe, the load rating is slightly reduced on the g2 (due to lower rated tire pressure) but still plenty for a 2500.

I really like the Nitto tires and have them on 2 of my vehicles.

These are working well on the F-250 with regard to traction, Cooper Discoverer A/T3 All Terrain 10 Ply E Load. Just put them on before winter this year so can't speak to tread wear. It had comparable M+S Michelins on it, great ride and long lasting, but would get stuck on a shadow.

Took the words right out of my... keyboard. You can rank all available tires by performance: If dry pavement traction, ice traction, resistance to wear, resistance to hydroplaning, etc. plus number of miles driven on the model. I got a good gripping top rated hydroplaning tire for the summer, and studded snow tires for winter so there's none of the compromise an "all-season" offers. You can get them mounted, balanced and delivered on rims too. Fantastic site--bought from them six times--always good experience and best value when shipping was factored in.

I've found tire reviews, at least for e load range truck tires, to be pretty useless when I've been looking. Always seemed to be a lot of opinion and people's results were always vary different, maybe due to how they are used with loads/ towing and different front axle configurations.

I usually find Discounttiredirect.com to usually have the best pricing however since I use to work in the industry I can usually get tires ordered from friends shops at a couple dollars over wholesale so I haven't bought from them in a while.

A lot of your traction problem is because the Cummins is a heavy engine. Without putting weight in the back of you pickup, you probably won't find any tire that gives the traction you would like.

just put a set of these Tire Details - Discount Tire Direct on my 2007 toyota tundra 2 wd last thursday. Haven't had a chance to check out the traction I'll get
I have a tire machine at home ,so mounting them was easy for me. Great price on a 10 ply tire !

I agree with Oliver1555. I have a 2004 2500 Cummins long bed 2wd. I curse the lack of traction, unless I have a half ton or more in the bed. I have been amazed at how well the truck works going up hills with weight in the back. Unloaded it goes up hills like it is going no-where. Firestone Transforce AT tires with look knobby enough but do nothing without ballast.

Rick,

I have run a couple of sets of Toyo AT2s on my '04 Ram. Plus a set of highway tread Toyos. With 2WD, you might consider a set of AT on the rear and HT on the front. I hope you have a limited slip diff.

Toyos are excellent tires that last a long time, have good traction and stay balanced. I got 68,000 miles on a set of Toyos. Cooper Discoverer is another very highly rated tire. On my new '14 Ram I had Transforce tires that only lasted 19,000 miles. Careful.

None of the new E rated tires are actually "10 ply", or "10 ply E rated". That is an advertising scam. They are actually 10 ply "rated". This means either 2 or 3 ply sidewall with 5 plies under the tread and have an E rating. Read the specifications imprinted right on the sidewall. Just call them E rated.
