Let's talk 9mm hand guns

In Michigan, we have gun shops with indoor ranges [ few and far between ] that will 'rent' you a pistol and sell you ammo to use at their range. Gives you a chance to touche feely different pistols. I assumate you might have the same somewhere on the east coast. :)

Many gun ranges and some gun clubs offer gun rentals. That's what we're talking about. I don't know of any states in the US that won't allow that. A quick Google search found two in Western NY, in the Buffalo area.

Around here, a lot of the shops will sell you a gun. You can take it and shoot it, clean it, take it back, and they'll buy it back for a few bucks less than you paid for it. Next person that comes in can buy it a bit cheaper and do the same. The amount it actually costs you isn't much more than a rental fee at some ranges and you're not limited to a small selection of heavily used rental guns.

As for living in NY; you are correct that many things are not allowed there. They ban everything down to Big Gulps... Do you like to travel?

Travel to a non communist state and try out various pistols there. We are very gun friendly here as are many other states. In fact the communist states are in the minority.

I think the problem is that the handgun market is like any other market. We have good guns at affordable prices and we have better guns at not so affordable prices (e.g. my H&K VP9 with night sights and third magazine ran $700...no regrets at all and I think it is the best gun I could have bought but certainly out of the range of many). No gun store I know is going to offer the higher end guns for rental. Now perhaps the high volume stores might get a break from the manufacturers for that purpose but I would define the majority of the market as being in that $350-500 range. Btw, from what I am reading, the "hay-day" for the industry ended with the last election (bad for them, good for us)...prices are projected to drop because inventories are high and the threats of confiscation have lessened.

Don't fuss with the trigger until you feel you need to. I'm guessing there are way too many that replace the trigger to get a lighter pull that do it just to do it... not really to improve target shooting. I say shoot the gun first before you start 'modding' it.

Agree 100%!!!

I do not like a light trigger on a carry gun.
Sometimes a modded trigger can reduce the handgun's reliability
Most important (to me) is a light trigger in a stress situation can result in an accidental shot...

Absolutely agree with Roy and dragoneggs. I participate in a few handgun forums and it seems many modify triggers just to be "cool".

One of the cardinal rules on any gun (long or short) is not to enter that trigger zone until you are ready to shoot. It goes along with never aim at anything you don't intend to shoot and know your target and beyond. Now as to many of the modern handguns, the internal safety is integral with the trigger...several have a 2 stage trigger that basically asks whether you want to proceed.

All well and good... but as Roy pointed out... a stressful situation and you may not behave as well as you were trained. Reliability is definitely unknown vs. stock.
