Is the fitting going on a short ways then stopping? You may not be fully retracting the retension ball. Sometimes it takes a good amount of force. Or it might be stuck.

Unhook the cutter from the tractor and pull away from it, then slide the pto shaft apart on the cutter, this will get everything out in the open so you can clean and inspect the inside of the coupler and make sure the lock mechanism is working smoothly. Once that's done, then you can try sliding the coupler on the tractor with out having the cutter in the way. Once you get it sliding on and off, put it back on the cutter then hook the cutter back up and the pto.

The PTO drive shaft came already mounted to a slip clutch on the rotary cutter. The drive shaft slid out ~16" or so not sure I'll measure in the morning . I'll try taking the two halves apart if I can't find my calipers. Yes the end of the tractor PTO shaft is tapered and the drive shaft doesn't seem to make it past that either which is what lead me to think they are not right together. I can turn the tractor PTO shaft CCW enough that if they wanted to go together they should be able too. The drive shaft cam with two chain one on each end. the one was in attached to the mower already, the other was hanging partly in a little baggy. I'll put some marker on the drive PTO to measure the distance travel while raising/lowering it. I only hope I don't have to cut anything. I can but its not something I am looking forward to.

the chains on each end of the PTO shaft, hold the the shields in place and help prevent the shields from spinning. if you look at Eric video. you see one of the chains on the shield.

goal of pto shields, are to help prevent a piece of loose clothing, and/or your body from getting wrapped around the PTO shaft itself. in order to do that. the shields are placed over the pto shaft, and then the cheap little chains on each end, get attached / clipped to tractor and implement to keep the shields from spinning. by no means are the shields perfect. but to many accidents have happened.

below video shows how to check pto shaft, and if you need to cut pto shaft down.

Huzzah!! Firstly Thank you for all the tip and suggestion. I caught a break in the rain and pull the tractor forward pull the drive shaft apart checked to see if it fit and it did. Yea one mystery solved, Then the hard part putting it all together again. The bungee cord tip made lite work of manhandling the drive shaft into position. First attempt even with moving the PTO a little it didn't line up quite right; back the drive shaft up some then spun the PTO once and it slid on like a champ. I still need to measure the amount of travel the drive shaft extended but it seems like everything should be fine.

Thank you again everyone.

I find the plastic shield on the implement PTO shaft combines with the metal one on the back of my tractor to make it nearly impossible for a man-sized hand to get in there to depress the lock pin. My first bush-hog was so old that the cover was gone, and it was easy to hook up. I got so frustrated with my new hog that I pulled a knife and hacked half the plastic bell off the tractor end of the cover. Now I can see what I'm doing and actually reach the pin - and the cover still does it's job covering the u-joint. Did the same with my flail, now I don't dread changing implements. I do grease the splines before I hook up.

Most newer Kioti's have a shield that flips up on the tractor to aid in the clearance around the shaft to get it connected.

On my Branson I found that shifting the PTO lever into neutral lets me easily turn the tractors' PTO shaft by hand so I can align it with the PTO shaft. Some of my implements like the wood chipper have too much inertia or friction for me to turn them by hand by rotating the PTO shaft. The Branson has an electronic independent PTO but there is also a lever to mechanically turn the PTO on or off (and on Branson, to select which PTO gear you want). Most tractors with independent PTOs also have the lever.

I'll take a thumbs up on the video then so it is easier to find for the next guy. :)

Eric, thanks for the video. Very good idea.

What is the lubicant mentioned in the video? I couldn't understand when listening what you called it. I have always used WD40, but if your product is better, I'd like to give it a try.
