The router I use (from this thread) was $26. So $85 seems high to me.

If you found one with USB input that works for that amount then good for you. I bought the T-Mobile Asus one that was around $65, which still seemed like a decent deal for a powerful and functional router. Since the power supply for the Mobley was 30-something that's why I said $85 seemed decent. I was just trying to answer a question for someone...

Not being critical, just throwing out other options. I bought a super long USB cable for as much as the router.

Performance-wise, I'm used to being throttled to 3.6 Mbs down .9 up from the Comcast Loyal Customer Soaking Program at ~$45/mo for my 15Gb/mo habit and 39yrs as a subscriber, and 24yrs internet access/acct.

Interesting. I"m paying for 15, but often get 20 on Ookla speed tests. However, cable is a shared resource, so if neighbors are using heavily, it can get slow.

I get bursts into the 5s up, and >1 down but numbers I get from any speed test level in the 3.6-3.7 and hi .9s. These are Mbs and not MBs, btw. Router connection from two each android phones and tablets, Iphone 5, and four Dell laptops I'm always in the 45s in network, and when I'm watching 4 vacationing neighbors' homes and still not 'borrowing' bandwidth to feed my 15Gb/mo habit. Router is Linksys E1200, Modem is Arris SB6190.

Every 'speed test' mentioned here, and a few others echoed anywhere from across town to St Louis, MO have repeated the same results, even at 4:00 AM.

Needless to say, my Mobley feeds any tested so far at double the throughput with no consideration for placement, ie: hanging over pergola crossbar, from cupboard knob, dangling from wire where ALDL connector under dash bracket is busted (I'm a guy, ok ..)

All that said, It seems there's a 'crossover point', and I'm imagining that with signal strength ~-99db we're well above 10Gb. When I was at -112 I was streaming from Fire TV on the Mobly sans hiccups. My Fire TV is 'hardwired' (25' Cat5) to my router and I was told my (Comcast) connection didn't have enuf 'speed' to stream "Heavy Metal" a framin' cartoon needing 720p or less and pro'ly 30 fps. ('Digital' fixed that???? riiiight .. ):laughing:

If you're with me guys, I'm all Gilbert Gottfreid fishin' for nods of recognition. (always shorter than my Dennis Miller-ish gems)

If you're late to the party, Mobley works well, for cheap, requires only a tad of manly patience (1 mo for me) to wait out hit or miss service. That hint from someone to hang up and dial again for someone less confused wasn't needed, but IMO is priceless.

Oh, btw 10s across the board for Thread Title. (bonus-rant) OP, I want YOU to 'go straight through to the final!' for that.

I already had the Asus router so that was not a cost for me. All I had to buy was the power supply for the Mobley and the USB cable.

Bummer. And your contract with Comcast spells it out as a "best effort" service, which means they don't owe you any fixes. Believe me, I do understand that!

Yes, indoody, there certainly is. Actually, more than one. As your signal strength increases, the network changes your modulation scheme to allow better throughput. As it decreases, it ramps you down. The reason is the higher throughput modulation schemes are less error tolerant, while the lower schemes are more tolerant of bad conditions. So, if you have a clean signal, we ramp you up to get the better throughput, if the signal is bad, we gear you down to be more tolerant. Kind of like using a lower gear to climb the (bad signal) hill, and up-shifting a few gears when you crest the peak and head downhill.

Thanks, Mark! I actually get that in regard to the Mobley.

btw, apologies that I got carried away supporting(?) that I've indeed been 'throttled' vs 'impaired'!

With AT&T this one plays really well now.

Mobley came unactivated. Try to activate via web....failed, because my id/password got hosed, and was forced to call.

It took 4 different phone calls and about 2 hours. I asked on one call "you don't even know what a Mobley is, do you"...laughed and said no. The accents made me SCREAM. But finally...got it activated. They didn't say a word about a fee to do so.

Glad that you got it activated. Sure wish I had those speeds.

Showing 2 bars of signal and -109 dBm on the AT&T Wi-Fi Manager (url is 192.168.1.1).

getting ready to pull the trigger on this, but the $45 activation fee really rubs me the wrong way.
I did a chat with a rep and laid it out that if they could waive the activation I would get it. She couldn't, so I won't.

For what it's worth, for whatever reason, it appears I had no activation fee at all.

I need to route this Mobley. Will a cat5 to usb connector allow the Mobley to hook to my existing router that has no usb connection?

When you buy directly from ATT there is no activation fee if you pay $99 for the device (no 2 year contract).

I have a feeling that AT&T will cancel me at some time for using it at home and streaming, so I didn't want to pay up front. $45 with a 2 year or $99 with no contract would be a no brainer, but I will be going another direction I think. Years back I got stuck with an expensive phone I couldn't use after the carrier decided to change their broadcast technology. once bitten twice shy.

People have been using it these for almost 2 years now without any problems. Not to say it will last forever but for the price if it only last a few years it still pays for itself easily.
