I have not read all of the previous posts. But the metal seems thin and I agree with various methods of bending the mount as close to original as possible and fab up some supports.

. But, strengthening one part of something may just transfer stresses elsewhere and cause more problems.

I would go shopping for a heavier piece of equipment instead of spending good money and time on something I would most likely damage again. Just food for thought.

The first time I hooked to a tree and pulled it out, it was close enough where I could have bought a mig and maybe learned to weld. The 2nd time I bent it, it needed more work. I was also concerned about spending money on $600 tool. This is a guy working out of his house. I couldn't get a caught qupte out of him, but I think it will be decent price. I told him only worth $600 new.

I am hoping to have a better piece of equipment than new. I also worry a little about transfering the weight to another point, like the tractor.

I am hoping I learned something thing, and will not treat this like it is beefier, but use better judgement. Though I am still surprised how tough that stump was, it looked pretty rotted.

I MIG is on my list. I have enough gift cards to get 120V at Fleet Farm, from my FF card I use for gas. Debating about geting 240 or better yet 120/240 unit. $800+ unit will take me alot longer to pull trigger on, that is just the way I am.

$350, but beefier than new one. Lucked out in finding this guy. Otherwise I would had to go to town and find someone. No shops in immediate area.

Had to use short top link, it is a little talker. I recommend getting a shorter link, it can give you clearance.

I spray it with some rust inhibitor. Not sure if will try removing rust. 1/2 steel. Need to be careful, something else doesn't give.

Wow, don't take it the wrong way but coming from someone who's been a professional welder/fabricator for years, in my opinion that's a really shotty looking job for the amount of money you were charged and not something I'd have been willing to send out the door for a customer. At the end of the day though if it works and your happy with it then that's all that matters.

Couple hours with a grinder and rattle can and it'd be fine. Looks like a farmer's repair rather than a "professional welding/fabrication" shop's repair.

It wasn't a shop, but a guys yard. I did think maybe it could have been cleaned up a little. But how much do you want to pay for $600 implement?

I have no comparison cost wise. I did find one place $50 /hr, between that and steel how quick would it add up?

The first time I bent it back on tree, maybe I could have bought welder and fixed. 2nd time was worse and needed someone to cut top off and start over.

Glad to have it done, he delivered it and helped me hook up. First time hooking it up, wore out from jumping on and off.

A shop might have painted it, for rust. Either way I got day off and headed out in the woods.

Hopefully I learned a lesson. Would be nice to have that money for something fun. Good to meet someone who can help, and maybe I should look at welding class this fall. Though wish I had $350 for tution.

Closest weld shop from camp is 30 some miles, either that or bring home, and have full bed until I come back up.

Don't worry too much about it, like you said, you learned something. If it works and the welds are solid you are back in business. I would clean it up and put some paint on it as suggested. Match the paint top coat as best as you can and forget about it.

$100 for some used (scrap) steel?
$250 for some "bubble gum" welds.

Ya sounds about it. Guy is a scrapper, so not just going to give the steel away.

I remember the first time I tried welding. Read a large book on welding from the library, used a friends cracker box and stick welded together a pulp wood trailer with my dad. We were both surprised it held together but it did.

Later a guy reopened the old welding shop in our town and I took it to him to fix up. He showed me some techniques about welding and over time we became good friends.

Read a little on welding and get some hands on practice and you will easily surpass the welding in your picture. PROTECT YOUR EYES AT ALL TIMES.
