Cheap $20 a month Stand Alone Unlimited Rural Internet through AT&T Wireless

After reading here about AT&T's $20 a month WIFI Hotspot to get internet out here in the boondocks, I tried for a couple of months to get it as they were out of stock everywhere I tried. I finally got it on Jone 24th and it has been great ever since. While the speeds vary it has stayed at least triple the speed of what I was getting from Centurylink at 1/3 the cost.

Yes, early on I experienced the "Power Saving" problem but that was an easy fix and it hasn't happened again. When I told my daughter about it, she got it for her family.

As a side note fellas, ATT activated Stream Saver on the Mobley (at least many) without the ability to turn it off. Haven't figured out if its only for 'heavy users' or not, but I am currently able to only stream Youtube and the like at 480p unless I go through a VPN.

Good way to check is to hit fast.com and let it run a speedtest from Netflix servers. If its on, you wont get more than 4.5mbps.

18 mbps so don't think I've got a stream saver.

Nice to know.. It seems some do, some dont.. We're starting to think its for those who go over a certain amount. I know mine kicked in last week after 150Gb's were reported used. Have to wait another 10 days or so for a new cycle to start to check again.

So THAT'S why I've noticed that fast.com's results are capped at just under 5 Mb/s in my tests in recent months!! I noticed that they seemed very inaccurate and strangely consistent on both my phone and Mobley using that site. Thanks!

I checked for options in the "MyATT" app on my phone and I can turn on/off Stream Saver for all phones and the Mobley. I'll try it and see if it makes a difference...

Rob, You actually have the on/off activated on your Mobley? Mine's (and many others) is greyed out saying 'Not available for this device yet'. When I asked ATT, they said it was coming but not activated, only it really is and I just cant turn it off :)

Question: Do you have your Mobley on the same plan as the phones, or on the standalone 'Connected Car Unlimited' plan? My is on the Connected Car..

Just did it. Shut Stream Saver off via MyATT app for my cell phone and Mobley. Tested both ways (direct cell data connection and wifi via Mobley) and both reflect faster downloads on fast.com. My cell phone was getting 57 Mb/s by itself and 22 Mb/s on Mobley wifi (same connect direct to Mobely wifi and connected through my ASUS router), all with fast.com. So it can definitely be shut off.

My Mobley got shoved onto the same Unlimited Plus plan as the phones. Still is $20+tax per month though.
