Once upon a time... I had some bats in my barn so I tossed a handful of wheat chaff in the air while they were flying around inside the barn one evening. They came down to investigate and I used a lawn rake to take them out. That was about 30 years ago, now I welcome the critters.

Find a way to add some natural light.

My dad used to put newspaper under swallows nests and bat roosts and occasionally weight the droppings to calculate how many insets they ate. He had some formula he used. Bats are beneficial. .

Leaving a light turned on may deter them.

My parents put a tarp up over the car, to keep the feces off of the car. Can't say i remember them cleaning the tarp but i'd think they would have had to. They eat a load of insects, including the insects that spread disease.

People are killing way too many beneficial creatures because of fear or worse "inconvenience"
Bees and bats are extremely important to life on this planet and humans are killing them in record numbers because "they make a mess"

If you dont want bats in your barn, take measures to seal up the building and provide the bats with a place a roost right outside.

Living in the country you have to deal with wildlife and that does not mean killing it all.

Please do a little research and learn to live the inconveniences and enjoy living in their world.

wagne223, I do not need you to tell me what to do with my barn nor dictate to me whether or not I should kill the bats. Keep your moralistic judgements to yourself. They are not welcome here! These damned bats are ruining the paint on my vehicles and equipment even through car covers, leaving huge amounts of potentially infectious feces that could endanger my family's health and if they are making any difference in the insect population I am unable to discern it. Mosquitoes are prolific in the area around the pole barn. Martins do a much better job. God made the animals for Man, not Man for the animals! I really do not want to hear any more from you!!

No need to get crabby...

Its kind of a known fact that Martins eat bugs, and they eat a lot of mosquitoes. But the mosquitoes they eat aren't the ones that bite humans. Bat's do a better job on those.

As for your problem and how to get rid of them.... its most likely illegal to kill them in your state. Most bat species are protected.

So how do you get rid of them?

Do you know exactly where they roost? Sound's like you do. Get some LED bulbs and put them in fixtures shining directly where the bats roost so there's no shadows. But they have to be on during the day. Not the night. Bats roost in the dark until they see the daylight diminishing at dusk. Then they fly out and feed. When they see the sun rising at dawn, they return to the dark area to roost.

Make the dark area light and they won't roost there during the day.

LEDs are cool to the touch and don't consume much energy, yet are bright enough to be annoying to the bats. I'd suggest 2700K as its an annoying white light, not soft. Put them on a timer that automatically adjusts to the changing sunrise/sunset and they'll last for years.

God made the earth for man to take care of....and we seem to be doing a piss poor job of it. Sorry the precious paint on your cars is being stained by some bats and that they scare you when they fly past. Perhaps invest in a $5 tarp from harbor freight and cover the car rather than kill some of God's beneficial creatures.

Yep. Bats are good. Nature is good.

do you know the point of entry? it may be their only way out too. I would just hang tarp over these entry points at three corners of the tarp so they can fall out , but not fly back in. first step is to get them out. they gotta go out and feed right? so let em out but not back in. then seal them up after they are gone. i would also hang a few mirrors in your barn in several places and plug in a flood lights and have a cheap house fan running to make the mirrors or mylar metal like balloons move around in constant motion so the flood lights reflecting on the mirrors would startle them from going back in. I have used cinnamon sprinkled from a dollar store in a friend's attic at point of entry and it works, but you have a barn so its probably too big to work.

No need to get crabby? That's your opinion. Since there is no electricity in the pole barn your advise is not applicable. I have found the answer to my bat problem. Thanks to most of you for your suggestions.

Regulations on the Removal of Bats | Sciencing

The Endangered Species Act of 1973 and the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act of 1956 protect the six federally listed endangered bat species, including the Indiana bat and the gray bat. Federal law safeguards not just the bats, but their habitat as well. Bats use caves and mines for habitat, and hibernating and roosting areas are protected by law.

State-threatened and endangered species are protected by state law. Regulations vary by state, depending upon the bat population status.

Led lights, with remote hook up solar panels have come way down in price, would make an affordable lighting option, for your non electric barn. And if you set them on timers you may help evict the bats
....of course you would need to try to find where they come in at and seal it off, and possibly build some cheap quick bat houses.
....I'm sorry, but I'm in the same camp as a lot of others, and would try to do everything possible, to avoid killing the bats.

Right. Bats mostly eat night bugs such as mosquitoes, moths and the like. Remind me where the problem is. :D

Roger that!
Post problem on public discussion forum, receive an opinion you dont like, tell person what to go do with themselves....... First time I have been chastised on this forum......people on this forum are generally more friendly, tolerant and open to others opinions even when they dont agree with the opinion. That is why I come here and avoid other places.

Not that you care, (others might) but this is where my statement comes from........

I am an avid hunter, however, I give to wildlife way more then I take and I am sickened at the number of people that want to kill animals that "bother them" instead of looking for other options. Bear get into trash, kill them, deer eat from my garden, kill them, birds poop on my car, kill them, stray cat walks through my yard, kill it, bees made a hive in a tree, kill them, Bats are in my barn, kill them.......I read this stuff daily.

It is this thought process that gives the anti hunters and government lovers the ammo they need to convince law makers to take away our right to hunt, fish and grow our own food.
We lost bear hunting in FL because of the antis, even though the science supports a hunt. Local governments are constantly trying to regulate private gardens (mainly through water restrictions) and how many chickens we can have.

These are real problems and I am passionate about freedom and conserving wildlife.

Sorry I got long winded........monkeydo, I will be sure not to offer you my opinion any more.
