HST vs Manual trans

I have 2 1990s trucks. The manual truck I'm driving, the automatic truck is down with the transmission out of it. My Silverado with a automatic also had transmission issues. I can't afford a brand new truck with a 8 speed transmission.

Wonder what that 8 speed will cost to replace or repair when it goes south!

I'd say a lot. Transmission shop wanted $1000 to rebuild my already taken out 4L80.

Your going to have to add one **** of a lot to that number to rebuild any of the newer stuff. They will be hesitant to even start work with only a thousand dollar down payment.
Price for building a tranny for my play truck would be around 8 to 10 just to take the power its making but I was able to put a manual in it for 1500 and got the 1500 back from selling the left overs off as parts.

I doubt many 200000+ mile ( my predicted life span of the transmission) trucks are worth that much.

As the last guy said hst is no good, weak and expensive to fix as they break all the time.

That's why commercial skid steers, dozers and excavators use them, so there can be a lot of expensive down time for the businesses that own them.

Small tractors and heavy equipment have even less in common.

I am looking at new tractors and so many of them have the HST transmission. I use my loader to move snow, dirt, and sometimes gravel would the HST do the job. I have used manual Transmissions for years. I occasionally mow with the tractor, but not often

An HST transmission will do the job just fine. Some people complain about the whine, some tractors whine more than others (just like people). Over the last 45 years I have had gear tractors, power shift tractors and hst tractors, I find the hst tractors will do everything I want them to do. While you do need to raise the rpms with the hst transmission this doesn't change fuel consumption much but it is not as efficient as a gear drive. The average compact tractor owner putting on 100 to 150 hours a year might use an extra 15 gallons of fuel per year with hst. For about a dollar a week the extra fuel is well worth the convenience imo.

You get all kinds of opinions on this forum about the transmission, "gear vs. hydro" and I feel both are pretty good. You really need to try out all of them and decide for yourself.

Actually, I suggest it's more due to the number of operators with varying experience (and attitude). Gears are efficient, but an inexperienced or incompetent operator can destroy a clutch pretty quickly.

You mean the ones that rest their foot on the clutch pedal? :D
