He isn't only guy around here with some first hand knowledge of many things.

If you had any idea of some of the situations I have got out of without using a weapon in the last 55 years working in and around high violence area's you might think twice about questioning me.

You guys have it all figured out so I'll leave it at that.

I really believe miscommunication is easier via the written the word than verbally.

You made a statement in a single paragraph without followup implying IMO that without a weapon, you're basically screwed (which I could of misconstrued).

My repsonse to you're comment was that your brain is your best tool for self defense. You in return to my comment about using your brain state that "it's the most ridiculous response" you've heard (thus leading me to believe that you DO feel a need a weapon for self defense) because if that wasn't the case, not certain how my comment about your brain being the most important tool was ridiculous?

Yet now you're making the comment that a weapon isn't always necessary and implying a weapon isn't always needed.

My writing ability sucks, but do you understand what I'm saying? Hopefully you can understand why I'm scratching my head...

The reality is some situations are a lot worse than others, but generally IMO it's is easier to avoid a no win situation by using your brain. When I was younger and much stronger and faster, I ended up in Camden NJ by mistake at 0100 from Philly (wrong bridge LOL) having to go to Jersey for a training class first thing in the morning (looking for a hotel before car/phone GPS, and couldn't read the map at night without stopping). Saw a cop parked and asked him how to get back to philly, he pointed, and I went, no questions after that. A white boy driving a VW in Camden at 0100 is a bad situation and I was smart enough to understand that. Personally I wouldn't care if I had a rifle, still wouldn't want to be in Camden (almost as bad as Newark LMAO).

Being a person of small stature and not good at self defence, a high school kid could beat the crap out of me, I like this old advertisement>>> God made men, "Sam Colt made them equal, and John Browning made them civilized".

One does NOT need a gun to be armed.

The biggest and best tool for self defense is your brain. Use it. That said, being out of shape and not knowing how to physically defend yourself isn't helping your odds.

ANYONE can be put in a no win situation, even if armed with a gun.

Excellent assessment and spot on for the topic...

I have no problem with a any prudent, intelligent person carrying a firearm in public...(lots of possible scenarios where I would be glad they were there etc...)...but what I'm opposed to is the idiots that THINK they are the epitome of the NRA (Not the IRA BTW) but next week they will be at the range and a hot shell will fly down their shirt and they reach around with a loaded gun and end up killing their kid with an accidental discharge etc...(true scenario about someone that THOUGHT they were a responsible gun owner...!!!)

Even smart people stupid mistakes...usually when they are dealing with unique situations...!

Based solely on how they react to minor issues, the people I personally know that make the biggest show of the fact that they carry are the last persons I would want anywhere in my vicinity during a real life bad situation. It isn't probable they would somehow transform into persons with sound judgement when the chips are down.

I open carry on my land. I'm on a private dirt road. Neighbors seem to think I'm stupid. Eff them. I carry because we have bear....the black bear I saw 2 weeks ago was young but could still have destroyed me. We have poisonous snakes...I don't need to shoot them, but I do. And there is always the possibility of 2 legged varmint showing ing up to victimize an old man. When I leave my place, I take off my gun and grab my concealed carry. I carry, as a few others have said, to protect myself and my loved ones. I avoid confrontation. If I am going to have a beer with my meal I leave my weapon in the car. If I can't go into the place with a weapon I make a decision. don't go in, or leave it in the truck. I carry concealed because I don't want to draw attention, and because I want as much tactical advantage as I can get. I hope the white beard makes me look harmless. I try to keep aware of my surroundings and strike a balance of being alert but not challenging to people. So far, so good.

I guess some here feel, if you use your brain you don't need the gun...

I like to have a back up, so why can't I have BOTH, my brain AND a gun???

IF you think you can get out of every situation with just your brain, then you aren't using your brain right now! I'm living proof that THAT just isn't possible in EVERY situation!
