Just a curious question , Not planning on trying or doing . As the title says , Would a Hydraulic pump , like on a wood splitter , pump water in a open system ?
Open system meaning a resevoir to draw from but pumping out a different way , not back into resevoir .

Have no idea " Why " this got stuck into my brain , But google researching did not produce much other than the link below mentions a water based fluid that
a pump can be derated in rpm's thus decreasing pressure in the " Fluid type and Viscosity " section .

I'd say it will briefly. Then it'll either seize up from no lubricant or rust up.

Figured it would for a bit anyway , since that link mentions the requirements for different seal types with different fluids . The bigger question is WHY this was even in my brain to begin with ???????????? Have no idea were it came from , woke up this morning with this question rattling around the vast emptiness of my head :confused3:

Thank's

We have some hyd pumps at work and have been told in the event of a catastrophic fluid loss water could be used....it'll work until it doesn't if that makes sense. These operate at 10,500 psi and would be considered life safety.

What are they for?

Hydraulic extrication tools. Think jaws of life. Trade name TNT tool was the company that made that claim

A gear pump is not ideal for water, but there are many "water based" hydraulic systems. There are usually some soluble oils added for lubrication.

One limit for pressure systems would be cavitation, and subsequent erosion of metal parts. For "open systems of fluid transfer, as long as there is some fluid to limit metal wear, water pumps by positive displacement as well as it does by inertia.

Don't expect long service life from an unadapted hydraulic gear pump though,

Especially at 10,500 psi. Said it'll work but I would fully expect it to trash the pump pretty quick. Like I said it'll work till it won't. Then it'll be done

One would not expect such high pressures in an "open" fluid transfer application.

Pressure drop as a fucntion of line footage would be "pumping to the moon". ;-)
