I can't argue who taught him this behavior. How do we convince people with this attitude that it is unacceptable in a civil society?

Tis simple. Go to court and tell the judge the circumstances of the citation. I would guess that most judges will dismiss a citation issued to a driver moving out of the way of an ambulance running with lights and sirens. Make a complaint to the officer's agency about the citation. If that does not seem to have the result one hopes for, go up the chain to local government. One can always go to the TV/New stations with the story.

Just so you guys are aware, in Michigan that used to be that when an officer ran your license plate, your license number was run as well and your CPL license would come up in the search results. But that changed about a year ago, and your CPL license no longer comes up with a license plate search. Lobbyists cried and said it was an invasion of privacy and the legislators made the change. Just FYI

And all the officer has to do is hit one more button & CPL info comes up.
Just because they passed a law against it doesn't mean the police follow it.
Body cams have proven how unreliable the word of a police officer is.

You missed what i said... It was previously stated in this thread that in Michigan, when an officer runs your plate, it also pops up your CPL permit. I'm just clearing the air on that... It's no longer the case.

A cop that would issue a ticket for going slowly though a red light to get out of the way of an ambulance is out of line and would be a disgrace to the uniform. The larger picture should have been taken into account. I have no respect for that type of cop. Revenue grabbing, ego driven dirtbag.

A lawyer confirmed to me that ALL vehicles have to obey stops and red lights.
The difference is that LEO's and emergency vehicles are tolerated and there is no tolerance for a civilian even on a totally deserted highway.
Its the LAW!
I once while defending a huge ticket in court had to make a statement as to my perceptive speed was.
Part of my defense was that I kept my eyes on the road and not on the speedometer hence it was always possible that I might drift above the posted limit.
The judge insisted that I state a speed so I said 'possibly 101' (limit was 100)
He banged his gavel and called guilty!
He then asked the clerk what was the minimum fine, (ans $25.00) and he asked me if I wanted delay to remit.
Keeping up the light banter I asked if they accepted cash.*
That was one of the better court episodes for me.
The ticket was a wild and impossible one as the LEO had issued a ticket for over 160 which that car could not attain even downhill.
What happened was the car surged suddenly on cruise control which I immediately cancelled. Also the LEOs were not even on the same road and I was uphill on a bridge while they were on the other side on a merging ramp.
Worst still was it was 3 AM and not a car in sight
*Once remitting I was refused cash at the station, they wanted CC checks or MOs only!
Guess they don't trust their LEOs !
Like some toll booths refused to make change for over $5.00 paper and since having just cashed a check I only had $20.00's.
U turn was forbidden and I was threatened arrest if I ran the toll booth.
I won when I pointed out that they were refusing legal tender and that I was sure any judge would agree with me.
Don't read me wrong, I'm not out for trouble it is just that I won' be pushed around by a hothead just because he has a uniform.
I'm the type that pays his fine/ticket if I'm guilty but if not I will fight!
As a sales rep I used to travel 30-40,000 annually and never had an accident but did see the occasional ticket.
My favorite LEO was one that tailed me for many blocks in suburbs and finally pulled me over for the many many stop signs that I blew (in very slow motion)
I explained that with all the parked cars and kids that popped out all over on foot and on bicycles that I treated all intersections the same way.
In other words real slow looking both ways.
(ever notice how kids never stop on bikes?)
He laughed, let me go and suggested other LEO's might not be as understanding.
In fact I probably never even went over 25 at any time with probably 5 in any intersection with or without a stop sign.
