Looking for semi-retirement land

I'm a Wisconsin native that left for about 20 years and returned. As the birthplace of the "progressive movement", I can attest that I don't have to worry about income taxes vs. property taxes or sales taxes or gas taxes or "sin taxes" or fees...we have them all covered (I think we rate in the top 10 nationwide...nothing to be proud of but we are seeing some progress). There are web-sites out there that can tell you the total tax burden by state which of course depends on your life-style.

I am also a Wisconsin native. I'm okay with paying a little more in taxes and having good schools, clean water, nice parks, etc. I wouldn't call Wisconsin all that progressive these days. Minnesota on the other hand invests in education a little more, taxes the rich a little more and is more socially tolerant, and yet their economy is doing better than ours. Hmmmmm.

That said, both northern WI and Northern MN, have lovely wild property and tons of lakes. You will find the people to be helpful and decent. It's usually the politicians that screw things up.

Seven U.S. states do not levy state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Your list is wrong, New Hampshire has no Income or Sales Tax.

If snow and seasons is no hassle- Maine has a lot of land in all size parcels and prices, forested and un-forested. Rural areas generally have few codes - septic mostly. There is a lot available. Try Zillow and look online. Maps, satellite, etc.. Many, many choices. Figure out what you need to absolutely have, and what you do not want and go from there. Good luck.

I have my eyes on the cookeville area. Sw va also.

We looked in Mid TN, I'm from Nashville so it was familiar. Beautiful country, but the summers are too hot and humid. We had enough of that in SC for 25 years. We ended up in the Blue Ridge and couldn't be happier.

We don't have an income tax here in Tn either.
Keep it up and I'll move to TN!!! Beautiful state I think that in a few hours you can find a place to suit your tastes (mountains to Memphis).

Along with the discussion of taxes 13 states do not tax retirement income.
Couldn't read them all because the site seems to be having some issues. From what I see, some don't tax "pensions" but may tax income from IRAs/401k's. I got a laugh when they cautioned about high property taxes in some of them ($2,000 is high???...that would cover a garage in Wisconsin LOL).

That was just a quick link - the point is that if taxes are important figure them in and there are more states than what were listed.
Our retirement location was determined by where the extended family lives and being within easy (15 miles) driving range of them.
We just lucked out that Mississippi will not tax our pensions.
