I dunno that hole hawg is 15 yrs old no issues. The one before it had no problems either but got stolen.

They still swap out the Craftsman tools. Bad part is that every time I trade in one that doesn't work or broken tip on the screwdriver, The " New " one I get back is lesser quality than the lesser quality one I got last time. Depending on the store, They do tend to hassle you a little about what happened or try to trade you for a beat up one that the assistant to the assistant managers assistant repaired while working 2nd shift during the Holidays.

Most ratchets will have a snap ring or one of those retainers that looks like a flat keyring, don't know the proper name, but they come apart pretty easy. They are usually dry, which accounts for the mechanical ratcheting sound. If they are gummy, a swish in the parts washer and a bit of good grease will free them up and quiet them down. I think most of the wear is from the fwd / reverse ball not getting full travel and the pawl doesn't fully engage.
If you have ratchets that you want to keep, might try this, it's better than chancing a dodgy replacement.

I bought a brand new in box hole hawg when the oldtime hardware shut down.... never had used it but now I wonder if this is why they never sold it?

I suspect that it was a limited issue because a big percentage of the (mostly plumbing) subs I see use the "Hole Hogs" and on almost entirely commercial not so much residential job sites...

I've drilled a lot of holes in wood up to 4 5/8". Also use it with a 6" earth auger to drill post holes for fences, mailboxes, porch supports etc. Banging through roots, rocks. If it was gonna break I would have broke it. Could be more recent ones are not up to par, just like Craftsman.

Not really. If Sears closes the “lifetime warranty” is worthless.

IMO they deserve no respect....the worst part is trying to find a cart that does not either go CLUNK,CLUNK,CLUNK.... or constantly try to steer you around a corner...the entry foyer floors are so (intentionally) rough you have to push them into the actual store to get them on a smooth floor to see if they roll OK...

Also about half the times I go to W-M when checking out there is a bag left from a previous customer that got left behind...their system is really poor for such a large B&M retailer IMO...

I知 no big fan of Walmart. But, I致e not encountered any of those problems in most of them I致e gone into. Putting together a business that size does merit some respect, imho.

I have a Milwaukee Hole Hog and never had a problem with it. It's much lighter than the 3/4" B&D I posted a picture of. I do believe mine from the days they were an American company but I do know they were bought out by a Chinese company years ago. Maybe there was a quality dropped off? I haven't had any issues with my Milwaukee cordless tools that are from the Chinese company.
