How far can I run a water line?

Sure, unless the cost prohibits it. Typically digging the trench is the big cost and the pipe cost difference is minimal.

A start for the details.

For a total of 180 feet, you really wont see any difference by increasing your pipes size to one inch. I would run 3/4 in schedule 40 white PVC in 20 foot lengths with the bell attached to one end. I would use purple primer and clear heavy duty cement.

For a little bit of water to keep some flowers alive, I ran 3/4 inch 800 feet to my front gate. It's flat, so that helps, and there is some loss in pressure, but when I turn on the spicket, water shoots out of it with plenty of pressure to run a sprinkler.

If you where wanting to go that for for a home of some kind, then going bigger in pipe would make a lot of sense. I just don't see it for 180 feet.

But what's the flow at the nozzle and the reaction force?

If you were wanting to pump 250 GPM through 200' of 1" pipe then you would need to pump about 1,875 PSI for the FL + NP of 100 PSI (assuming we are using a combination nozzle) gives us roughly 2,000 PSI EP.

If we were using a smooth bore nozzle at say 60 PSI it may be more realistic to do as the EP would be less than 2,000 PSI. :)

The reaction force depends on if the chief sees you trying this.

I agree with Eddie regarding pipe sizing for 180 ft you will not notice the difference - go with 3/4". In your area I would go with 160 psi poly not that rigid PVC - your soil moves too much. I will tell you how much I believe in this statement - last Monday I had 120' of 3/4" poly bored in to get water and also a gas line to my new shop building. He had it bored in and connected on both ends in less than two hours - directional boring is great! He went down over 5' where it went under my driveway just to be sure of being frost safe.

I have two stock tank lines over 3000 feet in length, one is 1 1/4" pvc, and the other is 1" poly pipe both work well, the one on the poly pipe was gravity feed for years only and only has a drop of about 15 feet in the 3000 feet of length, to get the flow I wanted I ended up pressurizing it, but one could still get about 3 gallons a min out of the hydrant with the 15 feet of head on gravity flow,

1" or 1.25" minimum. Not because it won't flow to where you are now but because;

1. The hole digging costs make pipe costs insignificant.
2. Someday you might go another 1000'
3. Someday maybe double the flow. (Horse tank one day and feeding your kids house 20years later. )
4. You never know when you may need to reverse the flow. If your well goes bad and the end of that line becomes the place where you need to drill.

Fire fighters formula is good. Based on the Hazelton Williams formula (maybe correct spelling....)

Bigger question is are you going to dig or plow it in?

180' 3/4" would be fine 1" would work as well as far as digging costs go for 180' an hr. or 1.5 hrs with a backhoe Isn't very expensive $150 not really much of a consideration. I have thousands of ft. of water line on my property & work for 3 water districts so I get to see & experience many situations. As far as pipe goes just don't cheap out pvc sch.40 or many types of continuous rolls in your case a 200' length of quality water line will serve you well string it loose in the ditch don't pull it tight.

2000psi through 200’ of 1” line? The chief is the only one I’d do that to!! My hydraulics are nearly that pressure!! I’d love to see that hose and pump....
