Medical costs

Am I my brother's keeper?

I think we've lost our way and become a less kinder, gentler society. Health care isn't something like a nice new car, or a big ole house or even going out for dinner at a fancy restaurant every night, that would thoroughly tick me off if i was paying for someone else.

I dont understand how this country has gone from co-operative society my parents talked of, where people help each other and great things are done for everyone at a a cost to everyone. It seems we've been convinced that if i have to pay for something, that someone else might benefit from, that it's a commie/socialist plot, therefore evil.

It has to do with people having to take responsibility for their actions. Doesn't make us less kind, but empowers the individual to be in control. Doesnt take away our ability to help others. We have got to get away from enabling people to make bad choices.
Govt ran systems are bloated and inefficient, just look at the VA.

The abuse of the system is horrible. That's why people are tired of carrying everyone else. Ask any first responder...fire, police or EMS. Ask a nurse in the er. They will tell you what it's really like how and the reality of the world is. There are providers and there are takers. When there is more takers than providers there is a problem. There is a problem. I don't want to keep paying for someone that has been a leach on society their entire life and has exacerbates the problem by having children to continue the government checks and teaches their kids how to continue the behavior. I take care of me and mine. Takers need to step up and start providing for them and theirs

I think you hit upon exactly the mindset that cqaigy2 was talking about.

How are those in our society with little to nothing supposed to "step up and start providing"? The system has failed them, and a mindset like the one you express only serves to kick them when they are down. Is that Christian? Is that what Jesus taught? "Blessed are the Americans because they take care of me and mine". I don't seem to remember that passage.

As a first responder, I've seen it up close and personal. The problem is that the "takers" don't have access to affordable health insurance other than medicaid. Many use the ER as their primary physician. Law enforcement are quick to "turf" someone drunk and homeless to the ER, rather than take them in and do the paperwork. Are we supposed to let these people just die in the streets?

But he did teach, "For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.
2 Thessalonians 3:10 ESV

This applies to more than food.....

Man has a God given responsibility to take care of themselves and their family. God also gave the responsibility of caring for the down and out to man, not to government.

Not all takers are poor. Not all poor are takers.
Very few are in the extreme case.

Our health system needs fixed, but the robbing hood method isnt a fix.

Yeah, so that was Paul the apostle who said that, not Jesus.

Our health system needs fixed, but the robbing hood method isnt a fix.

I'll not argue that it needs fixed, but it seems you are arguing against the insurance system as a whole where many pay in and some benefit more than others. Same with Social Security. Same with the Highway tax. You can argue that it applies to taxes for education, fire and police (why should I pay, my house isn't on fire), etc, etc. It's all a part of living in a civilized society where the haves help the have-nots and the less fortunate.

Life is not a zero-sum game where if someone else is getting something, that deprives you of the same thing. There's plenty of medical service, food, and compassion to go around.

There's no free lunch, or medical care. If your not paying for it, someone else unjustly is.

Exactly.

You are exactly right. That why you make the system as cost efficient possible right?

Right, there needs to be more discussion on why the costs are so high and what can be done about that.

People that have the ability to earn money need to pay for their medical services as a priority. A system that allows and promotes able bodied takers that do not pay anything for medical care is just not going to work. Same as stealing in my book.

Don’t take this as a personal insult but “Its the ABUSE, stupid.”

That’s what people object to.

There isn't a hospital around and most of the smaller local practitioners that do not provide charity care... some approaching 80% for the ER...

The flip side is too often those that receive are unwilling to pay anything... which is different than unable.

Today, we had a woman that needed surgery... her Doctor is performing it a no cost... the anesthesiologist is also donating her care... the Hospital has worked out a very modest payment plan for about 10% of the costs...

In the property management business I am the first willing to work with people that are up front with integrity... in others words a person that does not dodge my calls and is honest...

When someone says they need help... my first question is how much are they coming up with? I have used my own money to cover rent and been repaid over 12 months...

It is too easy today to demand and give nothing... hope that makes sense.

In my opinion it is health insurance that is the primary driver of our out of control health care costs. Insurance companies are in it for the money and they provide no health care, they just take dollars away from health care and at the same time drive up costs because the rich/powerful have great health insurance and don't care what the cost of health care is.

Then as stated earlier in this thread our health care industry is also for profit, so that also drives up costs. So I guess call me a commie, pinko, rat, because until we get some form of socialized medicine, I think our health care system will remain broke. The fact that (almost) all of the other first world nations have some kind of public health care as well as many many third world nations, sure makes me wonder why we think ours is a better way, especially when we are way down on the list of quality health care😡

*As a side note can anyone tell how to make some words bold on an iPad?

There are non-profit and not-for-profit... but the devil is in the details as some have come under fire as just being a more lucrative business model...
