My dream stove is an auger feed chip burner. I can get free chipper chips from tree guys. Then I could feed a hopper with a tractor bucket. That would mean no more cutting firewood and no more handling wood.

My 5 year goal is to have a coal boiler for the same reasons except I don’t get free coal.

Thank you for this post. I have been saving for my grapple and valve setup. I have been debating wether to get a � shape grapple or the clamshell. I will be picking up a variety of material but mostly logs, and split fire wood. Still haven稚 made a decision but this was good info I haven稚 thought of yet

FWIW, with EA's Wicked root grapple I've yet to push "under" a pile of brush. With a Wicked Root Grapple the technique is to push the bottom of the tines against the whatever you're nabbing, and then roll the top of the grapple over the whatever you're nabbing until both the bottom tines and the top lid(s) are touching the ground. Then the grapple is closed while lifting the loader up as needed to take pressure off of the lids as the rolling motion tends to lift the front of the loader-tractor. Other style loaders, such as those that have thin lower tines can slide under whatever you're nabbing, but the Wicked Root Grapple is not made to do that. You can see the rolling-nabbing motion in this video.

That痴 a lot of fire wood. I don稚 think my tractor would pick that all up lol. I use a ton of wood in my boiler. I hear a house and barn/workshop that was built in late 1890痴. Due to that keeping up with fire wood is almost a full time endeavor. I used to cut it, split it, stack it. Etc. now I cut it and split it and I to a giant pile wood it goes. This allows me to get more cutting and splitting done since I don稚 stack it. I have to cut and split because my wife has to load the furnace when I知 away due to work. So I dream of getting a grapple that lets me grab wood from the pile and move it next to the stove for my wife whilst I知 gone. When I知 home I load the stove using the tractor and forks sliding 3.5ft length logs as big around as I dare. That way she get a solid 24 hours before it needs reloading.

Maybe other grapples work well for picking up cut firewood.

But I have tried a few times and it was not a productive way to grab and move it. jmo and ymmv

ps. picking up brush piles by sliding under them with a round tined grapple is possible, but angle of the tines is critical, pretty easy to go digging when that is NOT what you are trying to do

I didn't measure any of them, guess their probably 45-60'. It was a really poorly managed planted forest so I have a lot of thinning to do when I have time, just wanted to get some of the danger trees out of there since my oldest has her chickens in there.

I keep a 4' strap for exactly what you did with that chain but faster and not so heavy/noisy. Slide the strap under, girth hitch it through an eye, loop the other eye on one of the grapple teeth and at the far end I can even dump it without getting off the tractor if I want to then get a good grab on the log with a grapple and move it where it needs to go.

I didn't measure any of them, guess their probably 45-60'. It was a really poorly managed planted forest so I have a lot of thinning to do when I have time, just wanted to get some of the danger trees out of there since my oldest has her chickens in there.

pushed this one over- and caused a bit of pucker factor, although it worked was happy to get a dozer for the rest of the ones to be removed.

Still got intense removing this one next to the garage with a saw and dozer

Don’t kill the dream . I hope it works I’d be happy if I didn’t have to get on and off the tractor all the time. I think it’s biggest savings for me will be moving the rounds to the splitting area. However I still hope I can grab wood from the pile.

Thank you Obi Wan Kanobi! The dream still lives. I’ve almost saved enough to order the grapple and valve. As well as my brush mower. I want to order it all at once.

Question that video shows a dual lid the one that best matches the tractor is the single lid. Anyone have experience with that setup? If so how does it work for you? What’s the biggest limitation?
