Exactly the reason I would never buy used.....people drilling holes in a system that is designed to keep boost pressure.

Apparently Ford has made the proper changes to remedy this, and not by drilling holes in a pressurized system.

So let me get this right WilliamBos ....the thread is about Ford Ecobousts , but you constantly are inserting about unsubstantiated AFM GM engine problems , and you say I am the one misdirecting the thread. Careful your inconsequential bias is showing William ! ..... but I am seeing the pattern .
Yes, because the gm i own will be my last one...msny friends out of pocket on gm afm engines with no help from gm. swapping to Ford.

I also refuse to buy a truck that is built in Mexico - and to support a company that bails and moves there after receiving bail out money from us.

Check gm forums, loads of afm issues.

You read the Ford F15p forums they list some problems with the 2.7. High oil usage as I recall. 5.0 with knocks. 3.5 EcoBoost blowing up. Anybody that makes a lot of vehicles is going to have a few problems.
The 2.7 eb oil use was found to be related to a 6 month run of bad cylinder heads, ford either did top end under warranty or new engine. The 3.5 had timing chain stretch issues, the 2018 engines have addressed all those issues.

Ford added dual injection for 2018 - 2 injectors per cylinder (1 port and 1 direct) which will eliminate the intake valve carbon issues that direct injection is known for.

The 5.0 Coyote was multiport up to 2018, now dual injected.

Every turbo system with an intercooler had a weep hole before the EPA shut that best-practice down. Every aftermarket intercooler has a weep hole. The hole exists because the air goes through a pressure drop causing moisture to condense out of the air in the intercooler. Rather than puddling up waiting to be gulped down and cause at best, a mis-fire, and at worst, a hydro-locked piston and a rod through the block, condensed water and crankcase fluids are then blown out of the weep hole.

Here is a guy who took my advice to drill a weep hole into his intercooler.

Here is my video showing that the weep hole is always under some pressure and there is no danger of ingesting water.


I explained in the video's description:

Ford cannot just drill a 1/16" weep hole at the bottom of their intercoolers to solve the on-going water-vapor misfire problem, but you can.

The Result: at idle there is insufficient volume to develop any notable pressure. However, the big idea is if a 1/16" weep hole drilled at the lower left front corner of the intercooler to solve the misfire issue ever draws vacuum, and it does not. As a result, I wouldn't worry about a weep hole at the bottom of the intercooler unless one is crossing a flooded road or doing water crossings. In those conditions, a nipple should be installed, and a breather line popped on that vents at a higher place.

Well, I know nothing about auto's (don't pay attention to anything that doesn't make me money)....but on our class 8 trucks the last thing you want is a boost leak.


And like Will said.....my friend had severe oil use issues with his 2.7 Eco-Boost and Ford put a new motor in it. But then he traded it for an F250, LOL.

And like Will said.....my friend had severe oil use issues with his 2.7 Eco-Boost and Ford put a new motor in it. But then he traded it for an F250, LOL.

Turbos have gate valves to blow off excess pressure. Weep holes are on every high performance turbo application because of the pressure drop intercoolers cause on the intake side. The EPA shut dow the best practice of OEMs providing a weep hole. Here is a Caddy forum discussing the practice. Intercooler Weep Hole
