Quality Electric Lot Splitter?

Here's the work of my "37" ton. It's a 5" cylinder so it's probably really around 25 ton. My other splitter had a 4" cylinder which is likely around 15 ton which I found was adequate. IMG_0732.JPG

Wonderful to have a report from the trenches...

I'm thinking since they bring the rounds to the wood shed with the tractor and my Sister In Law really isn't one for gas equipment... an electric would be ideal.

She would get frustrated with the gas saws to the point she wanted no part of any of the gas equipment.

She does love the battery Stihl CB200 chainsaw... so another plus there.

Ethanol is a big problem here with small engines...

I had an antique car in the carport... stored with half a tank for a couple of years... it was not the plan but that is how it turned out... the normal temperature variation through the day with humidity accumulated a lot of water... wouldn't have believed it had I not seen it clearly in the glass fuel bowl

My wife is the primary operator (her Dad as helper). Make sure to get the (optional?) "side tables". They make handling pieces much easier and safer.

My thoughts on them are the opposite. I've yet to find a good use for them except create another pinch point. An out feed table is great though.

Great response...

I called Timberwolf yesterday and learned they have a electric in the works for next year.

My 22 ton gas splitter has never failed but with large rounds I find it helps to "Read" the wood for a natural crack... still amazed how it bears down and then powers through... probably 30 years old.

I've been running to empty due to the gas available here and the splitter could easily go a year between a week of splitting.

Converting or using a power pack sounds like an option...

The shed has two 20 amp circuits that could be reconfigured for 240 volt is needed... time to watch Craigslist...

My 22 ton Duer has a small Briggs and Stratton engine that continues to perform well...

A 5 hp electric motor will require a 30 amp 240 volt service. If you buy a 3450 rpm motor, it will run the hydraulic pump at about the same speed as a gasoline motor, and deliver pretty decent performance.

I had a 3 hp electric motor on an 11 gpm 2 stage pump. That's the same pump used on the average wood splitter with a 5 hp gas motor.

3HP is borderline.

If its what you have, I wouldnt be afraid of using it. But if you are buying a motor to make the swap, I'd go with a 5HP.

Dads splitter is a huskee 27t and has the 11gpm pump.

Put on a 3HP motor with a SF of 1.15. FLA on the nameplate is 8.8A or something like that.

To make max pump pressure (dead heading by extending cylinder all the way and holding for a moment), it wants to see 11A.

So in theory I "could" burn the motor up.

But leaving the amp clamp on the lead, and through the process of splitting.....never saw a spike over 8A. And if it did, it was so brief that the meter didnt pick up on it.

I would much prefer a 5hp motor. But the drive I am using wont start a 5.

8.8 amps on 240V is a pretty weak 3hp, REALLY it's barely a 2hp, no matter what they call it.

11 amps on 240V is a STRONG 2hp motor, 15 amps on 240V would be what a 3hp motor should draw!
