Accuracy of excavator bucket breakout digging force

It seems that comparable machines from different manufactures have huge differences in the advertised numbers. Do these numbers matter when deciding on a machine?

What are you trying to do with the machine ,We do water main and use Komatsu pc60, pc78, pc138

Just what machines are we talking about?

50-ton machines?
15-ton machines?
Mini-ex's?

I would say if there is THAT huge of a difference, then the machines arent really comparable

More of a curiosity than a need. It is something I noticed when looking at excavators. Is it like HP on small engines when manufactures always fudged the numbers. 5 to 10 ton machines. Certain 18k machines go from 10k to 15k lb of breakout force.

A lot depends on the operator not the machine . If your just playing on your land . The doosan will be fine

You would have to cite certain examples, but I would have to believe that in the real world there isnt gonna be much operational difference of machines of the same weight class

The Takeuchi is over 16k lb breakout. The JD is around 10k lb.

Id say pretty comparable.

But alot has to do with bucket geometry. What type of coupler if any. (coupler extends bucket further out....less leverage).

But even the lowest....10k bucket force on a 20k machine.....plenty.

If you are stumping, get the one with the most force.

But just general digging and trenching....you use crowd alot more than bucket power

I have always found that weight of the machine has more to do with ability to stump then true breakout force. Sometimes you can jam the bucket into the stump and lever it out, but much of the time it is in bouncing the machine that breaks that suction on the stump and lets it rip out.

The older machines were actually a bit better at this because they would allow the operator to really reef on a stump. That is not always a good thing as when you are bouncing the machine around and it lets go and you are not ready for it, its kind of rough when you return to earth. The new ones seem to cut off the power a little too quick due to the computer. Granted they are a lot more comfortable and all that, and when stumping all day, COMFORT matters!

But overall, whether using a bulldozer or excavator, sheer weight holding the machine to the earth is what makes the job easier or harder in my opinion.
