How do you chain down your 50 HP tractor for transport?

That hook on the brush guard is the right way to go. The tension pulls correctly on the clevis. Many guys, because of no way to hook like yours, have a clevis that goes the other direction and the tightening of the chain put a lot of pressure on the clevis pin rather than the clevis itself.

That’s why I bought the twisted clevis. Works great and not chewing up paint.

Good choices but I do think that shackle is on the light side... (They are 20 tons!)

How do you figure the breaking strength requirement? Is it all of the chains and straps added up have to be double the weight of the item being hauled? I forget.

The D-Rings are rated at like 46k also bahahahaha

No idea on the breaking strength for a load, all I know is my 5/16 chains are rated at 5k, one on the front and one on the rear with a binder (don’t want to rely on just strap), I will put at least one strap 3,333lb strap on the front and back so just with that is 16k worth of restraints.

The way I see it, a 20 ton shackle is $8 more and the better binders are like $20 more, when a very expensive tractor goes rolling off the trailer at speed I would really regret going cheap on the restraints.

In all fairness I did, if I wanted to throw another $200 into it I would add 2 more binders and 4 grade 70 3/8 chains lol. But I may move the tractor once or twice a year so I figure 2 chains and up to 4 heavy straps will be sufficient. Not like I’m drag racing with the tractor back there anyway.

In a wreck I would expect the d-rings on the trailer to give before that I am mounting to the tractor.

When I modified my LS grill guard, to actually provide some protection, I also added a pad eye made from 1/2” plate. I can install a twisted shackle to run tie down chain thru. Rear chain goes thru a standard clevis to drawbar.

When I load my tractor, on my gooseneck trailer, I get tractor into position, for good weight distribution, and install chains and ratchet load binders on front and rear. I adjust rear load binders to mid-thread then pull tractor forward until rear chain is tight. Then tighten front chains. I have a regular stopping place, about 2 miles from ranch, where I can pull off and retighten binders.

I use 2” ratchet straps, with chain ends, for installed equipment and bucket or grapple.

Your comment reminded me of an experience I had this summer. In the past I have had F150 pickups with the gas engines. This summer I bought a F250 with the diesel engine. I was pulling my car hauler trailer with a rotary mower on it with the F250. I came up behind a very slow moving pickup pulling a travel trailer. Once my chance came to go around it I turned into the other lane and stepped on the throttle. That pickup shocked me in how fast it picked up speed. There is a chance that had I not turned into the other lane first I may have hit the travel trailer.

That experience reaffirmed to me to tie down a load properly every time, meaning tie forward and back. When I loaded the mower I started to just throw a strap across it where I was just going a short distance, but instead I tied it forward and back like I normally would. Had I not done that I would have slid the mower off the back of the trailer when I went around the other vehicle.

2 of the fancy handle folding binders to go with 2 20ft chains I already have. Between x2 7,000lb binders and 4 3,333lb straps I figure I will be covered on tying down a 5300lb tractor lol. But didn稚 want all to be straps.

Good advice and that looks to be the best deal on folding handle ratchet tighteners so I'm going to order a couple of those. Also a couple shackles but one notch down.

I'm going to use 4 pieces of 5/16" #70 chain and have two. Where is the bet place to buy 20' or so that I can cut in half or two 10' pieces?

Lowes actually has a very good price for a 20' section of 5/16" #70 chain, made in the US to boot.

I'll go there Thursday. Some of these things are regional and not available in all stores. Any more info or details?
I see a 20' Black Hawk brand for $80. How does price compare?


EDIT--There is no size mentioned on the chain I mentioned above.
Must be 3/8" or ? and I need 5/16.

My chains came from Lowe’s, they are 20 or 25ft 5/16 and coated gold, I bought them 8 years ago and used them for pulling and everything you need chains for except for towing with binders.

I want to say they were around $60 each but I can’t remember, they have spent over a year of there life outside in use, one is still gold the other is a nice shade of rust lol.

You don’t want the unbreakable shackles? Lmfao I may have gone a bit large on those lol.

You can buy those binders a tad cheaper as a set of 4 but with shipping and everything included the ones I found were cheapest threw amazon, maybe a tad cheaper threw a 3rd party site.

I actually learned about those folding handle binders on this site, one guy was raving about them on the tow something wrong thread I think, so I punched that in amazon and found the same ones, I like the idea of the folding handles for storage.
