How do you chain down your 50 HP tractor for transport?

There is also the ratchet piece that has a short strap with one end stitched to the ratchet handle and the other to a hook. So to replace the strap portion, I need someone that does this before, knows what they are doing and has the ability to stitch double thicknesses of heavy strapping. Apparently, no on does this so I may have to just toss my metal ratchet ends and buy new straps.

As mentioned, the metal ratchet handle ends I have now are super heavy duty and I've had them for years. They have never been in the weather and are perfect. They would hold the Queen Mary in place and must have been used for some Herculean task. As well, the hook ends are longer and heavier than normal. The strap was so tough it's lasted for 25 years of intermittent use and I'd hate to give up without a fight.

the tow strap has hooks already stitched on BOTH ends. cut it to length feed it through the ratchet. on the other end you will need to get it stitched IF you want webbing on that end or you can weld a hook to that side or use chain with a hook. we have several where we welded a hook to a bushing/sleeve that is the bolted to the end of the ratchet where the shorter strap would be. there is also a local sailmaker who has stitched some for us

If you are anywhere near a big city there should be rigging shop. They sew lifting slings of any size and should be able to fix you up.

Is the short end stitched to the ratchet handle? The 2" straps that we have all use a bolt to connect the short end to the ratchet.

We tried to sew them, my buddy's uncle work at a mattress factory , 4'' wide 27' long with flat hooks they did not last

Just put on a bit of chain for the short end, instead of a strap.

More goodies showed up today, these things are sweet, I really like the rubbery grab handle to bypass the handle but still ratchet to quickly tighten slack. Will work great.

I can put it in free spin and very quickly spin the rubber part to clear slack. I can see if you had a lot to work these would save a ton of time.

I have towed for years but only with straps--no chain ends-- and am amazed I can buy replacements like this. Duh, I had no idea. Can you buy long ends with chains on or is it them time to buy a whole hew assy?

I’ve watched how folks secure loads on trailers for many years. Amazing how many “amateurs” I see on the road, even Interstate, hauling small tractors, etc., totally unsecured and, I assume, counting on emergency brake on whatever they’re hauling.

Of those that do try to secure their load with chains / load binders, I see chains dropped thru stake pockets and hooked on the bottom side.



If .... anything gets loose, what happens to the hook, as a result of gravity?



Probably same on both ends of the chain?


Drop end of chain thru stake pocket then, catch Hook on top side of your stake pocket. If the chain gets loose, the hook is still hanging on the stake pocket.



A trick I learned, a few years ago, from a guy that hauled tractors almost daily is to eliminate most of the slack chain, usually wrapped around your load binders. Drop the chain hook thru the appropriate stake pocket then drop thru next stake pocket and hook to top of that pocket, like this.




I know that most of us know better but, if this helps just one of us ...... a wreck could be avoided.
