BTW, mine is about 6' long. I typically am placing 6 - 12' long pieces on it. I mainly cut this smaller wood to clear up areas and to have a little starter wood.

Used the mini-hoe today. Put the wife in the captain's seat and walked her through what to do. Worked awesome and was pretty quick. Scraping the idea of a sawbuck for now. Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Good on you for getting the wife in there on the machine. Be sure and remember not to tick her off, or she might take a swipe at you with that log.

I have used my 4-in-1 bucket to grab and hold 20’ logs (not too big around). I grab it in the center and hold it up at a comfortable sawing height. Then I cut down from each end. Works great.

Or you could use your logging tongs....

You can use logging tongs to lift up one end and then undercut each chunk. I prefer a grapple bucket or mini hoe but I have used tongs as well.

Having to undercut is a lot more work - I prefer to let gravity do its thing and let the saw rest on the cut - not have to lift the saw into the cut.

While I still had my backhoe I used it. Now I pick up several logs on the forks. I have to leave 4 feet of the last log but that still beats cutting it all on the ground. The 4 foot section is easily rolled by hand so it's not much trouble to make 2 cuts in it. Once I get a decent pile of rounds cut I usually drop a load on it to be cut and then get another load on the forks. That reduces the time wasted between sawing and tractor operating. Cutting the logs on the rounds usually isn't bad either because there's no dirt or rocks to worry about hitting. If I've got a log suspected of having metal I'll set it on blocks so I can check it with the metal detector. IMG_0747.JPG

I can certainly see cutting them on the forks as the logs would be much more stable than hanging in the tongs.
