That is why I mentioned it. There is no skidding no lifting of wheels just rolling backwards out of control.

so.... engine is turning forward, forward pedal is pushed, but load is making wheels turn backwards when trying to go up a hill...? HST problem or maybe just really overloaded.

I know this is going to sound rude but if you cannot figure out why you are sliding when going down a hill with a heavily loaded bucket in 2WD you perhaps should not own a tractor. Without a basic understanding of what is happening with your machine you could be killed by it.

I do like the first response though. "Gravity". :)

If wheels are not losing tracking, then your hyd is not up to the task. Are you running at high enough RPM to keep the hyd system at peak power/performance?

OP is not sliding.

We need a better description of the problem. What's really happening?

What range?
How steep?
Throttle position?
HST pedal position?
What exactly happens?
What's it sound like?
How do you stop the bad thing from happening or does it stop itself?

When you are going up or down hill with a heavy load and the tractor starts rolling backwards (in the case of uphill) or rolls forward in the case of downhill?
Seems like being in 4wd eliminates this.
Brake pedal seems to be ineffective as well when this happens...definitely causes a pucker factor too!

This phenomenon is called NDE (near-death experience). Discretion is the better part of valor.

Bingo! Sounds exactly what happens.

Low range
Fairly steep 20%+
Running at 3000 rpms
Pedal fully depressed
In 2wd (used 4wd but on dry asphalt don稚 like to do this)
No sound difference
I stopped it by quickly moving 4wd drive lever into 4wd
Back into control after doing this.
Task was pushing my trailer up my driveway to work on aluminum ice fishing shack (on the trailer) near my garage. Ice shack weighs about 400 lbs and trailer is a dual wheel 16 ft flatbed

How could it be the hydrostat being overcome if putting the tractor in 4wd "fixes the problem". That does not compute. The hydro is the hydro. 2wd or 4wd makes no difference. All I can go on is my own experiences. I say there is a problem with traction of the tires to the ground. How about having a 2nd observer standing beside the tractor to see what he/she can see? I have also heard of wheels slipping inside of the tire bead too.
