Power Trac Winch Questions...

I'm curious... Was a hydraulic winch ever put together? I'm thinking about a similar style winch to mount on the boom of my mini-excavator (Deere 50D). I have a Wallenstein WP830 firewood processor and it has a small hydraulic winch that has some impressive log pulling power (enough to snap 3/16" AMSteel rope if you keep pulling while a log is hung up). A couple thousand pound pull is all that I really need for smaller logs and tops. Think of a really light duty yoder.

I haven't put anything together. I keep thinking about doing it, but snatch blocks, cables, chains and just driving the tractor backwards has worked a lot cheaper than the cost of a winch for now. For as unoften as I'd use it, I can't justify the cost yet. Others things to put my play money towards right now.

Power Trac does offer two winch models, dependent upon your PSI and GPM hydraulic flow. They are each sold with the power trac mounting plate, which can easily be modified, and they are priced in the $900 and $1300 range respectively, plus shipping. The ratings are in the 2000-2500 lb range as I recall. shipping charges apply as noted. Never used one, have no experience with their performance.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, the PT winch does not have a free spool and could be difficult to pull line out. You'd have to power it out, or disconnect the hydraulic hoses and hook them together to try and pull against the motor, or put in a bypass valve.... or buy a different winch.

However, to be sure, give Power Trac a call at 1-800-THE-YARD and ask for Terry. He knows everything there is to know about all of their equipment and attachments.

MossRoad

Did you ever determine to cu inch motor size employed by PT? Does their housing encompass a gear reduction or is it just a hydraulic drive motor only? might spin too fast? Not enough torque at low GPM. (designed for PT rated pump pressure)

I don't now the size of the motor. It's direct drive. From what I've read in posts earlier in this thread, it has plenty of power, but is slow.

If you are going to buy a winch anything close to that price, get a Portable Winch (gas powered, light weight) winch instead. It is much more useful.

The more I'm looking at those, the more I'm leaning that way.

Drawback, can't be operated from tractor seat. What is lightweight? How much hp can they produce? Not everyone has a hydraulic power unit but small gas motor vs 33 GPM at 2500 psi.

I have the PT winch for my 422. As Moss says lots of torque, very slow speed. You cannot manually unwind it even if you connect the two hoses together. I believe I connected to a tree and backed up and it unwound m. I have not used it much. I pulled a log out of the woods, but I could have just backed up with a cable and done the same thing. It is not a bad device, just not flexible. It needs a second speed and a freewheeling mode. I would not buy again for my purposes.
