Hi Guys,

Just bought myself a Iseki tractor. doing all the oils as I dont think it has had any love for a while.

I found these chunks in the transmission oil filter. Should I be worried?

What components would have brass/copper washers or bushes? I have no transmission mechanical knowledge whatsoever!

There was also one big chunk of steel which looks very gear tooth looking.

Thanks in advance.

Does this tractor have a hydrostatic or manual transmission?

How thick are the pieces of brass? Could they be thrust washer?

I would guess it's a manual and that's part if the synchro shift plates. The steels probably from the gear teeth that lock the gears. Needs a trans rebuild.

I agree that the brass pieces look like thrust washers. How large are they? Can you take another pic with a quarter beside the pieces as a size reference. Does the steel wedge shaped piece have a rough/uneven edge on it (where it appears to have broken off)

You may be able to find a parts diagram online and see where the thrust washers are located and go from there. But it is not a good sign/will put more stress on the ends of gear teeth as some of the shafts can now drift in and out- is the transmission or PTO noisy at all?

Yes, you should be worried. You can see that one piece is a full 1/3 of a thrust bearing, meaning that the rest is likely at least part of that chewed up pile of thrust bearing.

You have trouble ahead, as things are now seeing freedom of motion that they should not have and will likely fail faster as more degradation occurs.

Put fresh fluid in, degrease the tractor completely, paint up and detail what you can, wax it up and apply Aerospace 303 dressing to any exposed black plastic/rubber... take photos and start listing it for sale. Get out now. At least I would. You may be able to clean it up and make back some extra money on it, as now your selling a clean, shiny, freshly maintained unit. It's a dirty underhanded move, but it is something to consider.

Your in a tough position. I would not trade places with you willingly.

Wow. Never buy anything from this guy. The down side to these off brand tractors is always abailibilty of parts. Get a parts diagram and pull the trans. It sounds like you have minimum damage to the gears so now is the time to fix it. You can get thrust washers anywhere or have them made cheap but if you start destroying gears you will need to find a new trans. It is not ideal but you can run with a couple chips in the gears if they are not cracked. I would expect it is not from the gear drive teeth but the shift collars or the teeth they engage.

If your going to run it with chipped teeth, radius the broke areas and smooth the radius areas so that you get rid of stress points.

As to not buying from me, I have never done that... but I did say that he in a tough position and that this is an option. I'm sure it happens more often than you would hope. I know that people dump cars/trucks when they know that there is impending and expensive failure coming. That is part of why I do not buy used. I don't trust used stuff or the people selling used stuff.

If its like the MF GC series tractors it could be from the locking differential lock. It has happened with some of our tractors. What happens is with one tire spinning slowly, engage the locking differential petal and it locks the other wheel. Sometimes of the wheel is spining to fast and you engage it this could happen. There is a clutch plate and gear.....gear probably sheared off and damaged the plate.

If so not too bad of a job to fix and hopefully if all the paces are accounted it should not damage the rest of the transimision.

Sounds like the guy that just bought this tractor had it slipped to him this way?

Thanks for the reply guys.

I will post some more pics of the pieces to get a better representation of size.

I have a parts manual which has all the exploded drawings too, so will look through that and see if I can identify where it may be from.

Yes the tractor has a manual gearbox, not a hydrostatic.

I might try get a quote on a transmission rebuild just to see what I am up against.

I have literally bought the tractor, driven it 50m and put it in the shed to replace all oils and do the FEL hydraulic seals. So unsure if transmission or PTO was noisy. Sounded fine for the short amount of time I drove it.

Thanks
