From what I understand the side walls are not able to handle the pressure of dirt pushing in if you bury it. As such if you do would you will likely lose the side walls sooner or later unless you build a retaining wall first. The strength of the containers is all in the corners where they latch together.Can a shipping container be partially buried along its side on a steep/stepped hill to make a flat above it? Maybe even a carport? Maybe will some kind of drainage or will that just be a corrosion disaster at a later date?
