DesertEagle, that's darn good gas mileage. Lots of guys with that engine don't get that mileage from what I've read. If you can keep it in top gear and cruise control, yeah
modern trucks will return great trip mileage. I have mostly short trips down town, and my Ram is stuck on 13.9 on unleaded regular. And while I drive reasonably, I like to hear the motor work a little. GM's small block and the hemi simply sound wonderful, proverbial music to my ears. You give that up pretty much with a turbo six but clearly you get other advantages.
If you can keep your foot out of it, getting 20mpg is super. Now that I'm selling my travel trailer, I wouldn't mind downsizing to one of the new small diesels. Just worry about being an early adopter with any of them.

The engine that absolutely amazes me is the 2.7 Ford Ecoboost. Amazing output for that engine.
But it still doesn't sound nice to a motorhead and that the 5.3 Chevy does very nicely. Not sure I could give that up; guess that's
why Ford keeps offering the 5 liter V8. Now that sounds nice too.

My choice in a new Chevy truck would be whatever model lets you stuff the larger engine in there. I had the 6 litre GM in a Suburban, my that played nice music.
The 6.2 is likely even better. It would be nice not to have to buy a 70k Denali or High Country to get that engine either. Team it up with the 10 speed auto and it
should get acceptable mileage. And would hustle nicely.

providing you have good Highway high pressure tires like C, D or E ply rated Michelin's and the trans is 6 or more speeds, rural 2 lane country driving can yield over 20 Mpg in these trucks, especially 1/2 ton.

Push the trucks along 60-70 mph, or tow with smaller gas motor and MPG really drops. Same goes for cars with tiny motors. Bigger powerful motors can get same or better mileage than small motors, if you are on a hi-way high speed cruising. Just plan your slowing down to coast as much as can be done safely, and be steady with the accelerator. City driving favors the smaller power plants.

You must be a lot younger than me! In my younger years I too wanted to hear the sound of the engine but these days when I close the cab door and start the engine the ONLY noise I want to hear is coming out of the stereo speakers. I would replace the stock exhausts with aftermarket to accent the sound...now I wear earplugs when on my quad or dirt bike, even though they have stock exhausts.

I too have concerns about these newer diesels...got some friends who bought some of the newer stuff and are not too happy. One just got rid of his Cummins, traded it in on a Powerwagon. The reason I joined this site is I'm thinking I'd like to get something newer than my tired and overworked 50 year old JD 2020 diesel and I wanted to see people's opinions on these newer models. Been looking hard at a Kubota M7060 but sheesh...diesel particulate filter, etc. Sounds like a lot of problems down the road in a few years. Plus, the nearest dealer is 130 miles from me and even there the Kubota tractors are kind of an afterthought with them - they deal mostly in industrial equipment for the mines. And used tractors around here - all I've seen for sale is the 200+ HP units and for the prices asked, might as well be buying new!

Wow they still have a lever for the transfer case selection?
Those come in the work truck package along with vinyl floormat and cloth type seats, like I posted in an earlier post if you can live without all the bells and whistles you can still buy one of these trucks at a pretty good price, when I bought mine in 2015 it was 6k more to upgrade from the WT package and the only thing that I really wanted that it didn't have was a CD player, I was able to get a nice aftermarket one installed with Bluetooth and all the other fancy stuff for about $ 800.00, the work truck package makes sense for me. To the OP I hope you enjoy that very nice truck.

We have a 2016 Tahoe LT, based on the 2014 Silverado chassis. There is a knob on the das for 2H, 4Auto, 4H, And 4L. You have to shift to neutral to go to 4L, the rest can be selected on the fly.
My experiences are similar. I'm sure a good part of it is that Suburu is a niche player, so they have to try harder at the dealer level. Don't make anything that appeals to me though.
If Subaru is a niche player, than so is Dodge and GMC. In 2017 Subaru was the #8 best selling nameplate in the US. GMC was #10, Dodge #12.

U.S. Auto Sales Brand Rankings December 2017 YTD | GCBC

The unusual thing about Subaru is that they have the highest percentage of cash purchasers of any brand. So while pickups have inflated MSRPç—´ and routinely offer $5-10,000 discounts, and many luxury brands come with tons of options because the majority are leased, Subaru owners are paying cash on the barrelhead and demand value. While they used to be a snowbelt brand, sales have expanded beyond that.

We used to joke that the Vermont state flag should have an Outback on it instead of a cow....

Does Subaru make a truck besides the Baja thats a disgrace to trucks?

I think they gave up on that pint sized Baja, gosh it looked like a bicycle would fill it up...but if all you wanted to haul was your bicycle and your tent, why not? Subaru has always done things its own way. I read somewhere that the investment required for a "smaller" car company like Subaru was so heavy in technology (their Outback Eyesight system works nicely in my 2017) that they had to leave other markets, like getting out of small engines. No more Subaru Robins. That's a shame. Not too sure Tecumseh was that badly missed, but Subaru will be.

The issue here on Subaru is the way they view their customers. You feel like they are on your side.
Do you get that feeling from your Chevy dealer? If you do, I think you are in the minority.
Most of the American dealerships have done a poor job of learning from Toyota/Lexus on how to take care of customers.
I think it has to do with the way employees and sales folks are compensated; dealers make their own problems.
It's all about the bottom line. When I lived in South Florida for three years selling yachts in Ft Lauderdale, some of the wealthiest folks coming in to look at million dollar boats were car dealers. And some of these guys weren't the most pleasant either...high risk high reward business.

It's like food at your local diner. If you serve good food at reasonable prices in a friendly manner, folks just keep coming back.
Car dealers always seem to want to make the big kill, and you are on the fender like a prize deer.
