"I cringe every time I hear the credit repair commercial that starts out "Don't let the credit card companies TRICK you into thinking you have to pay it all back".
That one always sends me into fits of twitching and eye-rolling. I've also been known to develop temporary bouts of Tourette Syndrome during that commercial.
I agree, but it is true.
So much advertising is directed at the lowest level consumer that is the most likely to get themselves into that situation.
As far as stealing from the banks though, they have an enormous fraud problem going on with stolen identities and false charges. They don't seem to care at all about that and don't bother to investigate.
Example: I had over $27,000 taken from one of my accounts and the bank was not interested in pursuing it, even though I had a name and address of the guy. They just politely refunded everything. Earlier, I had several thousand taken and I knew how did it. Again, they did not care or wish to pursue it. They simply told me if I wanted to, I could.
There is so much money sloshing around right now, so many incentives to cheat the system or borrow to the max and get in over your head, that the idea of a lawyer trying to get his little piece of the action seem like a small matter, at least financially. But not ethically. All the credit card incentives of 2% cash back, etc really only work if many people carry a large balance and pay interest, even though they are charging the merchants about 4% on every transaction for the convenience. The few that don't can take advantage of the system.
