CVT for the win Trebeck, LOL.

Anyone with this question has to run them both and decide for themselves, end of story, period, DONE! Doesn稚 matter what any of us Jackwagons say it痴 all personal preference.

where's the like button

You know if you think about it, a self driving tractor makes a lot more sense than a self driving car. Tractor speeds are by comparison very slow, and out plowing in a field or spraying or what not, seems like a safe place to do it. And you probably don't even need an operator in the cab at all.

they already have

This is almost as good as a “which oil is best” thread...

I like hydro for tractors under 50HP.

I really don’t get the point of those. Has anyone ever ruined an engine by running the wrong brand of oil?

They already make them. There are some good videos of them from CaseIH and JD I believe. No operator platform at all, just giant robot tractors driving from barn to fields via farm roads. They complete the field and move to the next or return to the home base. All controlled by someone sitting at a computer like us. Real life Farming Simulator.

When I was considering the gear/HST thing, one thing that had me wanting gear was my legacy with garden tractor hydro units that fail when subjected hard loads from constant work on steep hills.

One of the reasons for wanting HST was my 12 and 22 year old sons who on these steep hills would overall be safer with a HST rather than a gear.

I also thought that overall, log term, a gear tractor likely could have a longer service life with much more affordable clutch replacements over its life compared to a HST unit that in 15 or 20 years may cost more to repair/replace than the tractor is worth.

In the end, I decided that the advantages of the HST won out over the disadvantages for my particular property and use. But I think that this question as well as the responses are very individual and would not be the same as a general statement. If I lived in a flat-ish area, I would have likely went with a gear drive just because I have owned manual shift cars and trucks across 30 years and kind of like a manual over a slush box. But again, the unique situation of me personally made me take that opinion. The guys that like to bicker back and forth likely have valid points from where each stands. But they are not all standing on even ground.

I was looking at buying a tinker toy hystat tractor once, and in the manual it said: In cold weather, to start the tractor and let the tractor warm up for 30 minutes before use...

HUH? 30 minutes?? That's just crazy!! Some of the jobs I had, I wanted to be DONE in 30 mins, NOT just getting started... lol

Best place for a hystat is on a lawn mower, at least the whirling blades cover up all the noise the moaning hydro makes... lol

For the last time Rob. NOT ALL HYDRO TRACTORS MAKE HYDRO WHINE NOISES. I don't know how to say it any more delicately, but you are FOS and spreading the crap. Typically the smaller the tractor the more hydro whine noise it will make. Larger tractors make very very little hydro whine and that only when in HI gear and loaded. The is no way you can hear ANY hydro whine from my tractor when in LO or MED gear ranges. If there is any there, it is far far covered up by the sound of the diesel engine. The smaller oil passages of the small tractors make for much much more sounds coming from the hydro.

There is NO POINT in telling people things THAT ARE NOT TRUE. it is as simple as that. Tinker Toy my azz. Jeez. And you can Laugh Out Loud, or chuckle under your breath all you want to, but cut out the lies please. You have your point of view and that is just fine, but don't make chit up.

That’s a big plus for my straight shift truck. It’s a less effective plan with a loader and 3 point implement on the ground.

Maybe it is because it is new, but my B2650 does not emit an audible whine over the sound of the engine in low range at all, in mid range only if it is over-loaded and struggling do you hear it over the engine, and in high range you absolutely hear it. But it is not something bothersome, it is just a sound that the machine makes. Now, if you want to hear a whine, get on my Craftsman with the Hydro Gear G730, that makes some noise if going up a hill. But even that is not a bother, it's just the sound that a hydraulic system under load makes. I guess I don't understand why it is such a big deal for some of us that a machine emits a sound? My guns make sound, my truck makes sound, my tractor makes sound. The dead raccoon at the end of street is totally silent. No sound. But it's not a machine.
