I drive 230 miles round trip to work that’s exactly why I haven’t signed up with one of those insurance companies that track your mileage and driving habits for “better rates” Despite having a claim free record them seeing how far I drive would be a steep increase.

I asked the very same question to a farmer last week. He won't run it because he feels that it clogs up his fuel system, and says that the dye separates out with time. I only put about 150 hours on per year, (75 gallons) so given the miniscule price difference it isn't worth taking a chance. Even my '84 L275 ran cleaner when they came out with the low sulfer, although it took a while to get accustomed to the "soapy" smell.
He has no idea what he is talking about...
They should drop the tax and charge by miles, and weight of vehicle, and allocate that money only to road infrastructure.
Except how are you going to track how many miles it does in each state or municipality without using a GPS tracker which most people will object to.

One could argue that penalizes people who have to drive for work.
No more than paying tax on gasoline. Those with heavy vehicles that drive a lot will pay more; they should, they wear the road more! There are landing fees at many airports. My little Cessna may be charged $25, a big jet may pay $200. User fees target those who directly use a service. For commercial operations, those fees are, as they have been, passed on to the consumer.

I wouldn't worry about that. The largest part of fees would go to the feds anyway. But it would be trivial now to get the number of miles in a given area without tracking the location or date.

Was this in the winter?

Yes. The first winter here where we got to just below 10 F a couple days. Been quite a few of them this winter but none of this problem so far. Of course, I still use on road diesel. Don't know why except for that one issue, as I only have the tractor and generator now. Still, fuel here in US is cheap.

You file a 720 form each quarter for payment on fuel tax for all the states you drive in, Plus form 2290 heavy road use tax and Federal Excise Tax on Tires

I thought it was a couple hundred dollars plus a fee for any fuel on your property.
