Diesel fuel question

   / Diesel fuel question #11
Only tractor fuel problem I ever had since 2004 is ONE TIME when I got some off road diesel. Normally just buy on road in case I need some for my car (but don't have a car or pickup with diesel now, only tractor and generator).

Anyway, that stuff precipitated some wax globs that partly plugged the fuel outlet from the tank. Had to siphon out the fuel and then fish the globs out.

Was this in the winter?

I don't recall ever putting on road diesel fuel in any tractor, and my first diesel was a 1968 Ford 8000.

I have no idea how this internet myth came to be that "some off road diesel is not the same as on road" since it all comes from the same refinery and in most cases from the same bulk tank. Any difference would only be if the bulk distributor did not switch over from summer blend to winter blend in a timely manner. Summer blend fuel might then get delivered for winter use. Mostly I would think using summer blend in winter would be the fault of the homeowner who may have some summer blend stored for long periods and used it in winter time. For those of you who buy bulk fuel, it would be best to buy it in winter so you can use it all year long. Winter blend does have a bit less stored energy than summer blend but not so much that you would notice it in your CUT.

So NO there is no difference in the two fuels quality wise and either one will work just as well. You will just pay about $.40 a gallon more for on road due to the taxes.

Actually the only places around I can get off road diesel other than by delivery is at independent brand stations that sell very very little of it and the winter vs summer blend is a real issue. Also there is a difference between cetane ratings of fuel (40 is minimum but I try to by from Southern States that has their 50 Cetane fuel and also differences between lubricity values from various refineries and thus various stations. I don’t use off road any more because of several of those reasons but mainly because I like the ability to fill my 2017 Duramax if needed without getting in trouble or voiding warranties by using off road fuel with the dye that’s virtually impossible to eliminate from the system once used.

Brings about the question as to how will they tax electricity for electric cars.
Remember road fuel taxes is what (supposedly) is what maintains the highways.

You don't need an 'electric service station', you simply plug into your household outlet.
Or will future electric cars use a colored electricity? LOL
Me thinks they have missed out on a few flaws.

Yeah--Now we hear the government whining that fuel tax receipts are too low due to higher MPG's (they mandated) and electric cars (they are giving tax rebates on). Unbelievable--actually it's not.:banghead:

I asked the very same question to a farmer last week. He won't run it because he feels that it clogs up his fuel system, and says that the dye separates out with time. I only put about 150 hours on per year, (75 gallons) so given the miniscule price difference it isn't worth taking a chance. Even my '84 L275 ran cleaner when they came out with the low sulfer, although it took a while to get accustomed to the "soapy" smell.

i'm agree with you...

TN puts a surcharge on electric vehicles. I think it's $100 a year now when you register your tags. That money goes to the same place fuel tax goes.

I've known folks who say to put ATF in a tank of diesel fuel to help with lubricity and clean the fuel system. hhhmm.. so add some RED transmission fluid... hope their fuel never gets looked at.

That's actually being discussed in legislative circles, not just for EV's but also as fuel economy of consumer vehicles go up. One solution is to have a tracking device to tell where and how far you travel.

They should drop the tax and charge by miles, and weight of vehicle, and allocate that money only to road infrastructure.
