I went to our local Braum's Ice Cream store recently; it was fairly crowded...and as I was fighting to get my truck into a small parking space, some guy in a Mercedes whipped into a handicapped parking spot; jumped out, and scampered in like a monkey up a coconut tree. Of course he didn't have a handicapped parking sticker; and to put it mildly, it really chapped my arse.

Should have shot him in the leg... Give him a new perspective ...:D

Love this thread, as I sit here with a twisted ankle and can barely walk with crutches. I've had 3 back surgeries and got temp tags three times that hung on my mirror, HC tag. But I wouldn't use one today.

Technically you were violating the law if you were in WA State. With the Tag you also get a wallet ID card. The Tag is issued to a specific person and they have to in the vehicle to be legal. Here folks have been warned/fined for such violations. Most are caught due to whistle blowers though there are citizen patrols that check parking lots in their territory and issue tickets when plates or tags are not displayed, the a judge sorts it out. I was asked once to show my ID card by the citizen patrol.

I agree that common courtesy has gone out the window in this country. I have the license plates but; seldom use it unless I am on one of my bad days when it is hard to walk. Here there are so many tags out that the required minimum number of handicapped stalls is way short of demand. I can seldom find a spot at our Fred Meyer (Kroger) store and they have 20 of them.

That is good they have patrols.
but
Aaron beat me to hit, we all need to read more carefully.

On the other hand, I go to my local Home Depot often and have to park halfway across the large lot because the close half is taken up by rental equipment, Pro Contractor parking, seasonal nursery items, veterans and employee of the month parking, and of course lots of empty handicap parking. I guess if you handy enough to DIY... you don't need a special parking spot.
"Pro contractor" spot is not federally mandated.
I've frequently seen guys at the local Lowes park with handicapped tags or hangers and loading lumber, then drive off ALONE. The attitude around Northern Va seems to be if anybody in the family has a hanger all can use it. And what's as bad or worse are people using the temporary mirror hangars, I've seen many expired sucking up HC parking spots.

How was RSKY breaking the law?
Per his post, tags were issued to him and his wife, but they generally felt good enough to not need them.
They chose to use them when they had someone else with them who couldn't walk from a regular spot, but the tags that they had were still valid and they could legally use them any time they wanted.

Here in Tyler, it's fairly common to see a very nice Ferrari in the handicap parking space at Sam's Club. People will take pictures and post it on FB with a derogatory comment about some rich person is taking advantage. But the owner of the Ferrari is a Korean vet who was wounded fighting in the war, and after the war, was a successful lawyer who is now retired. He could be driving a KIA, and nobody would care, but since he likes driving his Ferrari to Sam's, people like to pass judgement.

Maybe that is what I should start doing, posting pictures of vehicles with expired handicap stickers sucking up HC spaces on Facebook.

Y es, he did not have the right to pull a gunn IN THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES. One can, however pull a gun to end a lethal thread on somebody else

And this is becoming a lethal thread :)

Should have shot him in the leg... Give him a new perspective ...:D
And then he could legally claim the HC spot! Tell him to get his leg fixed.

Reminds me of the broken taillight scene in Walking Tall. :)

I have sticker and get peeved when people have a dig at me when I leave a HC bay by myself, they are not interested that I dropped off a HC person some time earlier.
We have the same sort of stores as HD with HC parking, I wonder what the legality is if a non HC parks there as it is private land belonging to the store.
If I park in a HC zone illegally I can be $150 poorer but that is on a public highway/road/street etc.

Of course, I know nothing of the laws in Australia, or even many of our other states, but I was an officer in Dallas long enough in the past that I can remember when most traffic laws did not apply on parking lots because they were private property. I think that has changed just about everywhere now. But the handicapped parking violations could be enforced even though it's on private property. Nothing unusual about laws that apply on private property.

We also vary from state to state but I know I can get convicted for exceeding .05 in a pub carpark.
I work with quite a few disabled clients and often drop them off, pick them up or transfer them to another vehicle then get 'the look' when I collect my vehicle from a HC zone alone and obviously without any impairment.
I once saw a police car block in three cars in an angle parking HC zone and proceed to write tickets for all of them, that made my day, just too lazy to walk an extra 50-60' to pick up something.

I’ve heard that if there’s no sign and only a symbol painted on the pavement it can’t be enforced as handicap. True or not?

You mean I have to start paying attention to stop signs in empty parking lots? I do when there are people around, but not otherwise. Never seen them enforced.

Who actually stops at any stop sign when there’s no other cars present?

That's a pet peeve of mine. In my little suburban N. Va. neighborhood they all seem to be yield signs, and if the cars can get into the lane without an accident all is fair.
On my last 1 mile walk I counted 8 cars slowing to maybe 5 miles an hour for stop signs. Twice I've been almost hit in a crosswalk by cars not stopping for stop signs.
