I am not clear about the definition of "unstyled" versus "styled," but the link shows the "unstlyed" version ran from 1923-1939 and the later version ran from 1939-1953.

Unstyled is basically the engine and radiator without a hood or sheet metal. Styled of course then means it had a hood covering radiator and top of engine.

Thinking of how efficient those old tractors were in their hayday - in 1952 the price of wheat was $2.54 per bushel, could make a nice profit with something like a Farmall H or M, Ford 8N. 62 years later I sold my wheat at an average 5.37 per bushel. If I had to rely on a tractor as inefficient as the old timers I certainly wouldn't have taken up farming when I retired early. For one thing my body would handle it like like those old rough riding beasts.

The Massey 35 shown - would it really be marketable in America today? No loader available. Simpson engine (hadn't heard of it until this). Hydraulic pump stops when you press on the clutch (just like the old tractors). No power steering. Oil bath air cleaner. But it does have a ROPS!

A lot of those rocks are on edges of the treelines.. A few years back during President Obama's BiCAP program, much of that treeline was reclaimed into fields.


Yet common lore claims that most of it was farmland back in the 1800's. I find that hard to believe...

It's not common lore; it happened. I've have some pictures of Newburgh, ME from the late 1800's and there is nary a tree to be found on what is now totally wooded. Search the woods of places way north and east of Millinocket and there are stone walls running miles and miles back in the woods. It was all farmed. Those were indeed some hearty souls.

Even some old topo maps reveal the cleared and wooded areas and some of it is hard to believe.

I’ve seen the same thing in my native Hudson Valley. Stone walls surrounding land a goat wouldn’t want to walk on.

Power steering was an option and can of course be fitted, it has a two stage clutch so the pump will not stop, the engine is a licenced Perkins, probably an AD3-152 and not the the A3-152 as the original had. Emission demands kills it i US and Europe.

YES! I was going to say, don't forget the OLIVER 550! The Oliver 550 was what the 8N wanted to be when it grew up.. 8N, 2N, 9N ford was never considered a tractor, It was more of a sick tom cat trying to scratch dirt.
