Running Generators in Parallel?

Let痴 try this another way......

. The panel has 1/2 the circuits on one phase and the other 1/2 on the other phase.

.

It is not two phases, it is one phase split in half (unless it truly a three phase circuit if in a three phase circuit they would be two different phases,), but it would still be a single phase circuit, if your only using two lines, for
208 or 240, not a polyphase circuit,

My opinion is to put in a whole house transfer switch under the metter, and get a generator capable of running both places,

I have a 200 amp transfer switch on my distribution pole, and the generator ties into the same trans fer switch,

So let me understand this post- you cut the first half of my post, take it out of context and delete the portion right below that talks about split phase. Then you repeat my post and idea from post 5 re: the transfer switch location as your own. Thx for adding.
OP decided a few posts above what he wanted to do. Thx for highlighting what I’d already posted. That would help, if he, like you, didn’t read thread.....

Until May 18 our local Costco has the 17KW Honeywell/ Generac standby generator with 200AMP transfer switch for $3000, well worth the money vs the EU7000 which costs more does less. With doing less then 50-60 hours of standby a year our 20KW Generac will go a long time. Just add a 400-500 gallon propane tank and you are ready to go.

Thanks David, that looks like a good option and I'll do some more research on it.

Just curious. What are the responsibilities of a B&B for loss of power? Most hotels don't have total back-up if any at all. What do they do? Apologize, and ask you to pay the normal bill? I mean, it's not their fault.

I was surprised how long it took for someone to mention one of the Generac setups. Very cost effective, it has an exercise timer, so once a week or once every two weeks, it'll start up and run for 5 or 10 minutes. Very quiet. You could get the automatic switch too. I went with a bigger one and it runs the entire house, 2 central air units, well pump, dryer, stove and anything else. The power is clean and we haven't had any problems with electronics, which can be sensitive to how clean the power is. My folks had a PTO generator and the modern electronics in some of the appliances did not like the power fluctuations. Sure, the tractor has a governor, but it takes time to respond and it isn't always perfect.

I had a neighbor with a 20 KW or so High Quality Name Brand PTO Generator running off a Ford 5610. His lights flickered in an annoying manner. The shaft was straight. I never did find out what was wrong.

In general, A PTO rig should give better power than a 3600 RPM screamer on account of more inertia to handle startups. My 15KW Onan on a JD 770 never gave a lick of trouble.

With something like a power outage, the AirBnB host (owner of the property) can provide a full refund or partial refund depending on the situation. Since we're on well water, no power means no water, so in that case I'd most likely provide them a full or partial refund depending on the length of the stay. I might even help them find another place to stay. Better to have happy customers long term even if I have to lose money in the short term.

So I could potentially lose money by not having a backup power solution in place.

My pto gen set is a Windpower, 15kw continuous...

I've had it on a few different tractors, powering my whole house... No matter what was on, or what "modern electronics" I turned on, everything worked perfectly and as it should have.

Not ALL gen sets or tractors are created equal, so don't lump them all together.

Their was a good thread comparing and contrasting PTO, standby and portable generators. All have pluses and minuses. Some more than others.

Things like cost (some place more or less value on convenience), fuel (most have hundreds of gallons of propane vs under 30gal of diesel), who’s around to start it (if one is at work can the other set it up and or just start it) etc were all discussed.
