The UAW members will get unemployment plus sub-pay, combined it will be about 95% of their normal 40 hour check. The ones who loose out are all the other suppliers who will be getting laid off because Ford won't need the parts that they build.
Different states have different rules; but here we need to be out of work for 2 weeks before collecting unemployment. I've never gone that long without a job, but have waited much longer for a check when I was subcontracting. It takes about 3 times as long to catch up, than it takes to get behind.

Ford pioneered the just in time parts inventory system that is admired and used throughout the manufacturing world. The downside of this lean inventory system is when a key supplier cannot deliver parts and the entire line must shut down.

Really? The JIT system originated in Japan, and a quick Wiki check confirms that.

If anything, Ford nearly killed itself several times over the last century with industry mis-steps. Stopping
production abruptly, for example, really hurt them back in 1927 when they at last decided to dump
the Model T, perhaps 10y after it should have been replaced. They never fully recovered.

The F150 is king, and I scratch my head when I see someone (as I did recently) spend $70K for this truck. But
customers keep lining up.

Ford's only dropping the cars, which included the Taurus, Fusion, Fiesta, and most of the Focus models. Those were all being outsold and out performed by the their line of "SUV's" and trucks, which is being expanded as the traditional styled cars are phased out. I'm curious if any of you guys were planning to buy one of those 4 cars in the next few years? My family has moved away from cars completely. Even an older sister who has driven small Toyota cars for decades is shopping for a small SUV now.

Toyota CEO credited Henry Ford for the introduction of JIT. Just in Time, Henry Ford's Contributions, Lean Manufacturing, Toyota

"When researchers examine the Japanese industrial renaissance they often find American ideas. This article describes such a situation. In 1980, Norman Bodek of Productivity Press searched for the origin of Toyota’s production system and its just-intime (JIT) method of production supply and inventory control. Interviewing retired CEO Taichi Ohno, who is credited with creating the Toyota System, Bodek inquired about the development of Toyota’s JIT method of production supply and inventory control:

Mr Ohno replied that he learned it all from Henry Ford’s book Today and Tomorrow. This conversation led to the reprinting of Ford’s book 62 years after its writing (Petersen, 1990, p. 95).

In searching further for the origin of this innovation, one could argue that Frederick W. Taylor might have influenced this accomplishment at the Ford Motor Company. Rising to fame around the same time, Taylor and Ford were aware of each other’s accomplishments. The purpose of this article is to explore the possible influence that Taylor had on the development of JIT production methods at the Ford Motor Company and then show how Ernest Kanzler developed this approach in collaboration with Henry Ford[1].

Following a short overview of JIT production methods, this article will summarize the experience and views of Henry Ford. Then a description of Frederick Taylor’s scientific management will be followed by a more detailed discussion of the possible influence that Taylor had on the development of JIT production methods at the Ford Motor Company. This article will then concentrate on the work of Ernest Kanzler and Henry Ford in developing JIT production methods" (emphasis, mine).

I think what Ford pioneered was the moving assembly line... not JIT.

Standardized parts were Henry Ford's legacy. He actually was a pretty forward thinker in a lot of ways though. The Dearborn company was formed to give the employees some ownership while retaining the family's control over the rest of his companies.

I did not know about that quotation from Ohno, and I have not read Ford's book.

Looking a little deeper, I see that Ford has been credited with some of the ideas embodied in
Toyota's first JIT manufacturing system (1962), but FoMoCo did not implement such processes
until much later.

So some of the ideas may have originated with Henry Ford, but the implementation seems to have
been in Japan first.

Perhaps Ford did not implement JIT because his rigid assembly line did not accommodate any
model or option flexibility.

He was certainly ahead of his time with respect to efficient, if rigid manufacturing, using interchangeable parts
and a moving line.
