Here is it a year later and I scanned through many oil threads and to post #50 in this thread for an answer to this question.

Ken

then you stopped 2 posts shy. back in 2017, post 52 states where used oil can be taken.

Forgive my ignorance but what is the difference between tractor transmission oil and automatic transmission fluid for a car?

Remember UTF's and UDT's are a universal tractor oil taking the place of hydraulic oil, transmission oil, gear oil, power steering fluid, etc.

In reality probably not a lot. Although ATF usually has pink dye in it. They both serve similar functions, lubricating gearsc cleaning & cooling clutch material, & activating hydraulic pistons. A torque converter isnt that far off from a hydraulic pump h motor in some respects. But there probably contain different additive packages. I still wouldn't risk running it in my modern tractor.

In fact, my old faithful JD 318 garden tractor specified JD's product or type "F" automatic transmission fluid. Both were red in color.

Keep in mind there are some big gears in the rear end that want special EP adds.

I don't deny that people use this oil. I also agree that it's in high demand.

A lot of people eat fast food on a regular basis. It still doesn't make it good for you.

I'm not trying to change anyone's opinion, I just don't understand owning an expensive piece of equipment and going cheap on fluids. Especially the hydraulics that don't need to be changed that often.

Again, just my 2 cents.

Alex

Agree completely. Over the time-period of hyd. oil changes, the per-hour cost difference is minimal compared to the trouble and expense of a problem caused by low-cost lubricants that hide behind a "no-name" to identify it's pedigree/refiner or specify a standard.

If you really want to compare the cheap lubes with the good ones do it after they have been used, the cheap lubes always look like crap when they come out and they stink like the bilge of a tuna boat.

I used to use a particular auto parts store diesel rated engine oil. Used it for quite some time on naturally aspirated diesels. Bought my first turbocharged diesel tractor and put it in it. At 100 hours it came out like hot urine. That was the end of cheap oil for me some 35 years ago. I haven稚 gone broke buying quality oils and I don稚 expect to.
