Oil & Fuel Tractor Use of Red Dyed Fuel on Public Roads

For every farm tractor on the highway there are thousands of diesel trucks. State DOT inspectors or whoever does vehicle safety checks are much more interested in non-taxed fuel being used in trucks than they would be finding some farm tractor out on the road going to another field.

IMHO - if law enforcement has the time to check a tractors fuel type as it is transiting on a county road - perhaps there are too many LEO's in that jurisdiction.

This is not an enforcement issue. There is no law prohibiting the use of untaxed fuel in offroad equipment in the US. Doesn’t matter whether the equipment is in a field, forest, mine or road.

I read, in part, from the laws governing dyed diesel fuel in the State of Washington.
1) Tractors and farm equipment("Q" decal vehicles) may use dyed diesel on public highways within 25 miles of their registered address
2) It is illegal to operate a farm vehicle with a "Q" decal, on Washington State public roadways, with dyed diesel beyond the 25-mile radius.

It is important that we are aware of the existing laws and not rely on myth or assumption.

And to always keep in mine, there are federal laws and there are state laws which vary from state to state.

LOL,
What shade of PINK is acceptable?
None in my home state! The PA D.O.T. doesn't rely on the color but use a test strip to check for off road dye and will detect if you have been using it recently even after refilling the fuel tank with non dyed diesel fuel. :D

I would think mostly if a tractor operator gets cited for using the wrong fuel he did something else to piss off the law enforcement officer he was interacting with.
