Why is it that these days folks want someone else to fund their needs?
Parents go door to door to finance their offspring's adventures, graduations etc.
Go fund me's are getting more and more predominant every day for all sorts of events.

Seems every visit to the corner store or mart there is somebody wanting me to contribute to their kids latest adventure trip.

I have two children and they both travelled, graduated from the school levels and either they or we funded their activities.
But then we did not 'spoil them rotten' either.
WE made sure the learned the value of a $.
Both held part time or after school jobs and they graduated from university debt free.

An no, we are not misers either.
Both had cars during senior school years as well.

Son is a research biology scientist and daughter is a CPA and works for a major aviation company with a staff of some 25 under her.

Fortunately our grandchildren are enjoying a similar style of parenting with the eldest recently hired in a HR position with a firm that is considered in the top 20 employers in Canada. (and that was her 1st and only job application, they simply grabbed her!)

If your children don't end their sentences with "eh", be proud of yourself:thumbsup:

Rules I've always followed since my father taught were three things can get you killed in life, messing around with a guys money, his dog and his wife (in no particular order).

I can't blame a man asking asking for something for those 3 things (we're all 3 steps away from grace ourselves).

OP, never responded to my PM?

OP has a decent track record here, if he's asking, I can understand why.

It's not what those who do with what you gave, but you gave in your heart to begin with for what YOU believed was a good cause.

A fool and his money is soon parted, but it does you no good to have money and have a cold heart IMO. If you're blessed by your actions and what you believe in (whatever "higher power" or such), there is no reason not to share in your same blessings that were bestowed upon yourself. I'm where I'm at in life due to such a higher power I myself believe in. I've tried honestly to treat my own source of income per business by those same standards, and it has blessed me as well.

I hope my own children understand that meaning from the above.

I replied via email the same day. Maybe it ended up in spam?

Maybe I am missing something? How does the loss of one eye relate to putting him down? If you cant afford to fix his eye and he loses it, wont he still be an amazing dog?
He will adjust and still be the second best friend you have ever had. You have already given him the best gift possible, so dont beat yourself to death over this - just continue to love him and enjoy his company.

The issue is if he's not treated he could develop a persistent headache and be miserable all the time. This breed is tough as nails and he might never make any indication he's in pain.

Why am I asking for someone else to pay my vet bill? Because I'm unable to do it in a timely manner and I don't want my buddy to suffer from my shortcomings. It's called charity. There are people out there who find pleasure from helping people other than their own kin, maybe you should try it some time? :p

I've donated months of my life to helping other people, and at this point in time I happen to need some help myself. Is that so shameful to let folks know when I have a problem I can't solve (legally)? Had I known my logging wouldn't have generated the level of funds my forester was convinced we'd get, I would've spent those proceeds differently and we wouldn't be having this conversation. Hind sight is 20/20 so they say.

I'm a 70% service connected disabled veteran who's been unable to hold a full time job for the past 8 years. Money isn't something that comes easily in my household, but we do pay the mortgage, insurance, property taxes on two different counties land, tractor payment, kids braces, and somehow manage food for the 7 of us (3 cats, 1 dog, myself, wife, and kiddo). I just can't swing another $3K for Vinnie's eye.

Hey, I'm sorry - all I was trying to say in my own awkward way was your dog will be just fine if you cant swing the surgery. The bit about the headaches was not in your op, and i had to re-read the thread to find it.
So again, i did not mean to offend.

Just answer the question. How big of a financial reserve should one have in their bank account before they get a dog?

And do you have a dog?

No reserve needed. Just be prepared to let the pet continue down it's life course. Or be prepared to alter your own.

If you are going to own a pet, take care of it. "Go Fund Me" not necessary.

It's not just you. I find it amazing how many people piped up to say "eff yer buddy's eye" because of the cost or what the money theoretically could be used for instead. Sure, it's a free country and everyone has the right to speak their minds, but maybe doing your best to dissuade other people from pursuing their kinder urges isn't in the best of taste.

If your mother needed a kidney, would you want people to try to talk the donor into finding a younger recipient because old Ma doesn't have that much time left on the clock anyway?

Don't like the cause? Fine. Don't like me? Fine. Don't want to help for some other reason? No worries! But if you just want to post here about why YOU wouldn't contribute, that's rude.

I'm sorry I don't have $15K in the bank for a pet emergency slush fund. I don't have $15 that isn't technically already spent and owed to someone else. Not everyone lives the American Dream you know. Some days I wish I didn't wake up. At least then my wife would have some spending money after the life insurance paid out. Seriously, did you guys read the first post at all? I HAVE MAJOR DEPRESSION! Use a little tact for Pete's sake.

I'd do anything for my dog. Except start a thread on a forum asking for money.

Sell off one of the properties in a separate county. Sell the tractor you are making payments on. Then focus those resources to caring for the dog. Doesn't look complicated to me.

As a retired First Sergeant Army Vet with 40 years service I'm embarrassed that you throw that in as an incentive for donations.

Well Top, I'm glad I wasn't one of your troops. One property serves as our home and the other is where I intend to move us to for a better life. If I didn't have my tractor, I wouldn't be able to do what I do to prepare the land to build on. I'd be sitting in front of the tv drunk out of my mind or already dead. So your advice here sucks.
