Is Rock and Roll dead. Part 2.

There is someone we haven't talked about and that is Jack White. It seems to me he was one of the last big acts before rock started to fade. I came late to White but I'm a big fan now. His interview with Dan Rather was excellent. I don't know where he ranks with the guitar greats but he can crank on one for sure. I love the rawness that he plays with.

This is an excellent DVD.. If it does not start playing at 41 seconds, drag the slider over to there.

Here's one more GVF on Carson Daily....
I like it. Get past all the "sounds like" and come to the "sounds great" side. ;)
Crowd is happy.

I really like GVF. I'm also a bit LZ fan. Couldn't care less if they are called a carbon copy. I find that a compliment. Kid's got a great voice.

I guess it doesn't sound great to me. There is a difference between 'being influenced by" a band and being a tribute band. I see them as closer to a tribute band. Nothing wrong with that and they so seem to have some talent. As I said, a little maturity will go a long way with these guys. They need some song writing that gets beyond mimicking Zep and a really good producer and they might be able to put out a solid album. I look forward to it.

Oddly enough, these guys have opened for the Struts, which is they band that inspired me to post this thread. I'd certainly go to that show.

I'm looking for tour dates for The Struts. Nearest one right now is in a club in Delaware. Not going to drive 8 hours for that but their dates only go through September and seem to be heading south. If they come within an hour or two I'll go. Would prefer a small venue. No real interest in seeing them open for someone else in an arena.

Here is another one; apologies if someone had posted this one but my brother-in-law just sent me a link to this guy out of the blue. His name is Gary Clark Jr. Looks like he has been doing well for several years. I have looked at a lot of his stuff but he looks like the real deal. Plays like Hendricks, sings like Paul Rodgers. Plays a lot of blues licks in other songs. Apparently he mixes some hip-hop into some of his tuff which I don't care for but will be open minded. This video is one of his harder songs. Most of the stuff I've sampled isn't this hard:

Me, too. Heavy Texas guitar blues. Good stuff.

I just had to chime in to this thread to say thanks for mentioning Greta Van Fleet. I'd never heard of them. When I listened to them, my immediate reaction was to recoil in disgust that they ripped off Led Zeppelin. But, something drew me back to that video and I ended up looking up all of their stuff. They are legitimately talented! I don't think they directly copied any specific Zep songs, but have managed to make new music in the same style. I thought about it, Zep has been out of business for 40 years now. They only made 8 studio albums, which really isn't a large volume of material. And Zep themselves didn't completely invent every aspect of their sound in the beginning either (as some lawsuits have pointed out...) What's so wrong if a group of musicians who have the chops to do it want to carry on the torch and make new music in that style? My conclusion is not a darn thing. I've ordered their album, and am looking forward to hearing how they evolve. Thanks TBN'ers!
