Skunk in the yard at supper time

Anyone ever get sprayed? When I was in my 20s my parents went on vacation and wanted me to check their house. I went by one dark night, no flashlight but growing up on the farm I knew everything by heart. They had this small porch about 12ft square you walked on to get to the front door. I had my key ready to put in lock when WHAM! I thought someone punched me in the nose! No smell...just tremendous pain. I never saw the skunk but that's what it was. Eyes burning, choking... I ran to bathroom and took 10 baths!!!!! I put my clothes outside...then a couple more baths.
The house was permeated...I opened all the windows, put fans in door ways blowing outside.
Here I've live trapped them in garage when I leave a door open, catching with cat food. They're actually very docile and I just take them out and release them.
Growing up a neighbor had three daughters and they had a pet descented one "Stinky". They lived next to a golf course and one day this terrified golfer was up on their picnic table, he was hollering for help, Stinky walking around the yard.

I'm curious as to how many times you had to trap the same skunks you released, as they may have liked your property, and found their way back.. also, I wonder what the neighbors near where you released the skunks are thinking.. maybe they trap them, and put them near YOUR house..

Will say, when out walking the dogs at night with no flashlight, it's never fun walking right into the middle of a web between low hanging trees LOL

Technically he doesn’t say he takes them to another area. He just says he takes them out of his garage after he leaves the door open and releases them. That could be on his property.

Yes. The ones I trapped and released never came back. The mistake I made was a few cats in the garage so animals would come in after cat food. The outdoor cats have their own enclosure now, chain link fence, concrete floor so no more animals in garage. The skunks, etc. don't come around the house or garage anymore. I also put insulators, electric wire all around buildings about 4" off of ground.

I totally realize the inconsistency there. I have tried and tried to get rid of my phobia with no success. They say if you really get to know something, you will lose your fear and learn to appreciate it. I studied the dang things until I'm practically an expert....no go. Didn't help at all.

I simply cannot live in the country afraid to walk in my yard, go out at night, or even garden. So I claim the house and immediate yard. I accede to them the rest of the property and wear boots, and wave a long stick in front of me when walking trails. I also have learned "not to look" when working in the woods; if I don't see them, they're not there. We have a pest control company come 'round every month and spray around the house with a nontoxic (diatomaceous earth). They had never used it; I asked them to get it and now they have a lot of requests from other customers.

I have also put in much work to discourage them passively, i.e., removing habitats from the house/yard. My woodpiles are far from any structures. And my house is throughly sealed and caulked so that I never have to kill one in the house.

So that is my compromise.

just like ticks, mites, and roundworms and mosquitos have a purpose in this world.. not a good one, though..
