Is Rock and Roll dead. Part 2.

I’m 52. Went to quite a few concerts in the 80’s and early 90’s. Then after ‘93 didn’t go to another until 2011. Like you said, I thought I’d be the oldest one there. My son who went with me assured me this would not be the case and there would be many folks my age there. He was right. I tend to like “harder” rock than most of what’s been mentioned in this thread. Was only 10 or 12 rows from center stage at a Disturbed/Breaking Benjamin and right at the stage at a Chevelle show. They still crank it out loud.

Queensryche, Candlebox, Cracker... I love that stuff.

What is referred to as music these days and is a major portion of the grammy awards...I do not even consider "music"...calling it noise would be a compliment...!
Funny, that's what my parents said about the music I listened to 45 years ago.

Did your parents listen mostly to gospel music?
R&R evolved from rhythm and blues, jazz and swing and it's easy to see the correlation...

"Today's" so called music evolved from taking the vinyl records of the above mentioned music and moving them back and forth across the stylus with a hand...

Agreed, but that is what my dad said about the music that you and I like. The funny thing is that my kids, in their 20s now, like my music more than what is out right now, although my daughter likes modern country music....which to me is perhaps the music I dislike the most.

I love the music my parents listened to (mostly big band and swing)...also like country / western sounds...What I don't like is "commercial" music or a lot of vocals...I like musicians playing musical instruments...the more natural talent the better the music...one of a few exceptions to my dislike of vocalizations/singing is the work of Paul Simon...there are a few singers I like but not many...

"Today's" music is primarily dominated by basic pop, country and hip-hop (which I know nothing about). The current pop music can be catchy and can get stuck in your head but no one is going to be listening to it in 10 years. It has also become formulaic. I read an article about a pop song called "In the Middle". It is catchy but forgettable. The article indicated that the song had like 6 writers all writing with the intent of meeting certain parameters that would make it sell. Apparently 6 repetitions of the chorus is important. It is nothing new for record companies to lean on artists to create salable tunes, but this type of collaborative effort that is driven by marketability first rather than expression kind of makes me sick.

Pop country, which filled the hole left when rock shriveled up, is even worse. It all sounds the same (also what my father said about my music). And they give themselves awards on TV every week. The same 8 or ten artists, every year, year after year. What's up with that? And don't get me wrong, I've never been a country fan but back in the day at least it was real-ish.

R&R evolved from rhythm and blues, jazz and swing and it's easy to see the correlation...

That's why I'm into all that stuff now in addition to rock....although I'm not much of a jazz fan. Love classic R&B, delta blues, some Chicago blues, even some good old gospel, which can be hard to tell from the blues.

...It all sounds the same...
There was about a hundred bands from the mid to late 70's into the late 90's that consisted of minimally talented musicians and writers that sold a lot of records but the music sucked IMO was mostly the same chords over and over again (i.e., 'black sabbath etc., etc...etc...)

"Commercial" music...nothing makes me reach for the dial faster than just about anything that kenny rogers or bruce springsteen ever recorded...I do like Clarence Clemons and the E St band...just can't stand bs...!

They listened to country western... back then it was Bobby Bare, Merle, Porter, Dolly... they were country when country wasn't cool.
"...I don't slow down for dead raccoons or joggers..." B.B.

This world would be a lot better place if there were more Merle Haggards

 You overcome the lack of talent by turning the volume up... one reason that my hearing's shot today. I very rarely turn on the radio these days because the "classic" stations are still playing the same things that they overplayed 40 years ago... if I wanted to hear "Barracuda" again I already can hear it in my head.
